Hey Expats,
I need your help with something. I moved to Viet Nam eight years ago from America and I suffered a stroke 14 months ago. This was the start of the Covid 19 outbrake in Viet Nam.
Since then I have been trying to get some answers to my questions and I have not been successful so I come to you for help.
My mailing address is in Viet Nam so I rely on VietnamPost for my mail delivery. Luckily, I don't receive any mail EXCEPT my stimulus checks. It is the only way I can get my stimulus checks.
So what do I do to get my two and now three stimulus checks? I am on Social Security and my address is correct.
Please help.
Where do you get your SS payments? They should come to the same address. If you have direct deposit they should have came there. Go on the website to check the payment status.
How was your past tax return was paid or refunded? If it's a direct deposit to a bank in the States, then the 1st and 2nd checks are deposited there.
The 3rd check is tied with SS: it's sent the same way and on the same day SS is sent. For example, if your SS is deposited to your bank on the 3rd Wednesday of the month (the date is based on your birthday), then the 3rd check will be in your bank the 3rd Wednesday of this month, April 21.
If your SS happens to be deposited on the 1st Wednesday of the month, then you'll receive it a month later (May) because the bill was passed either on Thursday or Friday last month, a day or two after SS 1st payday.

Hi Mark,
I seem to recall a while back that you successfully arranged to have your Social Security benefits direct deposited to your bank here in Vietnam.
Is that still the case, or did you somehow switch back to paper checks via snail mail?
Maybe other folks such as Rick (Budman1) who get their Social Security benefits direct deposited here in Vietnam can provide further info.
BTW, I'm back here in Quy Nhơn.
If you need any help with anything, please don't hesitate to ask me for assistance.
Cheers!
Also Mark, if you also get veteran's benefits:
My first two stimulus checks were sent to my US BANK (brand) account where my Social Security benefits are direct deposited monthly on about the 3rd Wednesday of every month.
However, this third check ($1,400.00) was sent on the 7th of April to my Charles Schwab account where my veteran's benefits are always sent on or before the 1st of every month.
My cousin in Thailand who has his Social Security benefits direct deposited to the Bank of Thailand received all three stimulus checks there, the most recent one hitting his account on April 2nd.
Do you file taxes in the United States? The stimulus cash is supposed to be deposited into the bank account associated with your tax filing. I’m guessing that has not happened for you. Try this link to the IRS https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment
The link will provide you with the status of your stimulus cash, and let you know if you need to provide more information to the IRS. Since you don’t know me, you may feel better looking up the IRS, and finding the “get-my-payment “ area. It’s very easy to find with an internet search.
Hey OB
I get my SSA benefits delivered to the bank in Viet Nam. It's all from the US Government to my bank account in Viet Nam. I have no bank account, or saving account in the US. It would be too easy to figure it out if I had the account number.
What I need it do is figure out the alpha, or alpha numeric code that is stamped on the letterhead. I don't know whether it's stamped before, or after its delivered from the US. I just know that it's stamped some where on the letterhead.
If you, or maybe some old timers of the Expats know the answer is I would greatly appreciate it.

Above my pay grade, but that sounds like the kind of lingo Rick understands.
I'm guessing if he doesn't know the answer he might know where to point you to get the answer.
You might try sending him a PM from his profile:

So much for that idea...

Hey Rick (Budman)
I get a lot of emails that diagnose my problem with the email server in the US, but my server is in Viet Nam.
Have you received the stimulus checks in Viet Nam? I have not received any yet and I would like to. What am I doing wrong?
The first two I got in the mail. Number three got deposited into our BofA account. Check the "GET MY PAYMENT" portal that's been mentioned above, it'll only provide you with info on the last check though. What's with this Alpha stuff?
Rick
Hey Budnam,
My wife asked the Post Office where my mail is supposed to be delivered and they said she needed a code, an alpha numeric code, to get my mail. Very strange I needed a code but this is Viet Nam. The alpha numeric code is an alphabet, or number code that simple states where the hell the location is at the Post office.
Where did you get the stimulus checks? They delivered it to you? I really want to understand and get my money that is due.

Yep, the first two came to our house here in the Delta. Been getting mail here for over 16 years, no problems. You mean to tell me the post office says you need a postal code for where you live and they can't provide it? How do you get the rest of your mail? What address do you provide on your 1040 to the IRS every year? That's where it (the check) should have went to. Some thing ain't jiven guy.
Here's the link to check the status on no.3: [link under review] it also gives you info on what to do about no. 1, & 2 if you haven't received them yet.

No. ESL problems guy?

Hello Budnam,
Yep, no first class from USPS mail delivery without the code. Kinda sucks.
I don't usually get mail. This was the first time I didn't get mail that I was expecting.
Usually, I get mail delivery from my email so no problem.
The next thing I'll do is check out the conovavirus website. I see that they have updated the website for past payments so I will go there.

I've used 99999 for many years and always got my mail. Have you checked your account to see if it got DD like it was suppose too be?
Rick
Budnam
I get DD as usual but no mail. I haven't used the 99999, I'll try that sometime.
I'll go to the conovavirus website and see if I get any better results.

Have you checked your account lately, like the past few days to see if it's been deposited? What VN bank do you use for your SS deposits? Something just ain't sounding right.

Have you checked your account lately, like the past few days to see if it's been deposited? Is it also a joint account that your wife also has access to? Check your account online and see if this transaction shows:
IRS TREAS 310 DES: TAXEIP3

Hey Mark,
Did you ever get it sorted?
More importantly, have you been doing okay during the lockdowns (considering your stroke)?
Hey OB,
I didn't get an answer to my question, but I have given up my searching for it. Oh well!
The lockdown is very easy for me. I've spent my time doing my workout and studying the entire time and I feel better everyday. Now, if there wasn't a lockdown and I didn't have a stroke I would be hurting for something to do. Thanks to my heavenly stars I have something to do.
So what have you been doing this lockdown?
Mark
Wishing you a speedy and safe recovery from what must have been a frightening experience.
You will get better because you have a very positive outlook

I'm really glad to hear you are on the upswing Mark.
I wish I knew helpful information regarding the stimulus checks.
My partner and I got out of Bình Định just in the nick of time last Spring.
Not too long afterwards we started reading news reports of things being shut down in Quy Nhơn.
Have things opened up there again?
We don't get very many posts originating from there these days.
Anyway, just after we leased a house at An Bàng Beach, Hội An, I found out I couldn't get my Visa extended any longer, so I had to temporarily return to the USA/Mexico and wait out the borders opening up again.
Are you ever in contact with Khanh these days?
If you ever find yourself in need of assistance but can't reach her, she and I are connected through Zalo & Messenger.
Send me a PM if you need my help or just want to chat.
I hope to cross paths with you when I return.
Cheers!
OB
Hi Mikeymac,
Wow, that's all it takes, huh? It's a bit more than that but it's a good start.
Mark
Hey OB,
It's been two years, but I'm seeing progress everyday. It's been long and hard, but it's been worthwhile.
Tet holidays were here and everybody was sick or had the sniffles. Some people have or had Covid so I sat at home out of the way.
Khanh has kept to herself recently. I see that she has posts but not too much else.
Nothing else has happened. Nothing else needs to be done, and it looks like nothing else needs to happen. I am self-sufficient, with the help and support from my better half, Yen.
When you get here I will take you out for coffee or something.
All the best
Mark

Definitely Mark.
I look forward to that.
