Hi Everyone

I am a first year PhD student currently at TU/e. The project I am part of expects me to do a secondment in Sweden for 18 months

I read that for Netherlands passport one cannot be outside the country for more than six months continuously.

My question is

If suppose I come back to Netherlands after five months, stay here for two weeks and then go back to Sweden , would this make me eligible to apply for the passport?

Or would I additionally have to fulfill some other requirements as well ? Also would two weeks be enough of a break or longer stay in Netherlands be required.

Thanks so much

Cynic

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Citizenship (so a passport) requires 10 years of legal stay in the Netherlands; there is no special rule for students.  Time spent out of the country does not count towards this.  Have you asked your University if any arrangement can be made with the IND so your course can be exempted from any residency rules impact?

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for replying Cynic

Unfortunately my University doesn't allow any arrangements with IND for relaxation to the rules.

Is there any round about way of going about it ? Like I am not here physically but still paying rent somewhere ? And then occasionally check in after a few months for a couple of days ?

Would this be valid then ?

Hi again.

When you leave for your secondment, you have to book out with the Gemeente, at that time your residence clock stops and won't restart until you return.

Alright thanks. Actually I have a residence permit for four years now.

So during secondment, if I come back for a couple of days, stay here and then go back , would that stop the clock from, well stopping ?

Hi again.

I've just re-read the requirements (link); it is 5 years for naturalisation.  Why don't you put off your degree for a year, then you wouldn't have any of this hassle?  Perhaps ask your Uni if you can delay the Sweden part for 12 months?

I think if you kept your accommodation and registration, then you haven't left (officially).
