Hi,  We relocate in December this year.  Your advice for the best type of vehicle to buy on the island for every day use?  Family of three.  Can one for instance use say a Golf to get every where and any where on the island?  Does one ever need something with clearance for 4 x 4?   Or a standard hatch back and you are good to go?  Thanks Natasha

Hi Natasha,
You don’t have too many places for a 4x4 and I recommend a normal family car. Kia Sportage, Creta, Peugeot 3008 (my choice) are quite common here, as well smaller cars that are good for daily activities, but thinking in 1 car only, we preferred a light SUV.

Hope helped

Cheers,
Fabyan

Thank you, so that would be the range of small suvs.  So for say a hatchback then a VW golf be fine?  Or Toyota Corolla which is common here in Africa.  Tyota and VW the ones I am familiar with.

you will be ok with them as well here and they are around. Just being a beach place, with chairs & other staff to bring with you when go to the beach, maybe these cars will offer you little space for everything, but they will work well for day-by-day usage.

and of course the price will be different...

Thank you Fabyan!

Electric Car - I love my little BMW i3 - we need more Green Impact in Mauritius.  Small cars are great for getting around the small roads and parking and most important  fossil fuel usage!!

hi fabyan
what would be the monthly rent for a 3008, sportage or xtrail on long term, self drive please?  I'm working on my budget as I have a job offer to work in Ebene.  thanks

Hi There!
When I had the same problem I saw too old cars being renting by a high price. I used a Suzuki Swift for some time renting by about MUR 12k month and offers of more than MUR 20k for a Hyundai Creta or a Ford Ranger. I bought my Peugeot 3008 with 6 months in Mauritius in a leasing with ABC Bank, managed by Peugeot itself, paying MUR 30k month, but for a brand new car that now it's mine.

You can find safe 2nd hand cars with a not bad price, minimizing the renting issue for just the beginning of your journey in Mauritius.

You can use your work contract to apply for a leasing, and currently car dealers are trying to sell their stock that is becoming old and you can see some good deals around in the market for a leasing option. 3-4 years old cars are also an option as you can find a leasing for them and their price already depreciate if compared with a "zero km".

hope helped..!!!

Thanks for your quick reply, Fabyan.
I’m not sure if going for a lease is worth as only plan to work in MU for 2-3 years. I’m concerned about reselling as an expat.
If you can share some ideas about SUV rental prices or PM some contacts would be great for me. I’m in the process of working on the costs for housing, vehicle, university/secondary school cost for English medium etc. My work will be in Ebene and I’ll probably be staying in Port Louis. Thanks

Hello
We are thinking about getting an electric car.

Are there regarging stations anywhere on island? Or manly around Port Louise's? And at the shopping centre's? Or do you regarge it only at home?
How long does it take to fully regarge?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,
I rented from AVIS for some time, using I'm part of their President's Club and asking for a long term rental option and later on from SF Car Rental (https://www.sfcar-rentals.com/) where Lee Lazare can work with you in a long term option. She is the owner.

I live in Black River and worked in Ebene for 1 year before the pandemic send us all home, and you will have a 40-60min drive in the rush hours, and we managed to have all family need fitting in only one car. Please be aware that parking in Ebene is a nightmare and if your company can secure a spot for you, take it, otherwise you will have a daily fight on it.

Be careful to look for a car not too old. maintenance is an issue for rental cars and I fight with both, AVIS and SF Rentals, for fix thinks or replace the car more than one time.

good luck with the decision.!!!
