Having just completed the 2020 tax return - we came across a problem entering the details for the GESY S1 tax exemption certification

it needed a expiry date but the certificate doesnt have one as its "indefinite"   - so asked the Tax dept and they advised entering the end of the tax year 31/12/2020...

voila job done and submitted....

Chris Yorkie
Hi Toon

Is that the same S1 issued by the NHS that you use to "prove" your exemption from GESY   contributions?
Toon
Yes ....the tax dept issue a tax exemption certificate with your own unique ref number .... Make sure you have that as many people didn't get it and thus got charged the gesy fee of 2.65%.  When you complete your online tax return you must enter the expiry date as being the end of that year IE  last tax year's would be 31/12/2021 and this tax year's will be 31/12/2021

It will be SI not S1 you will need Social Insurance exemption for gesy
Toon
The official form S1 issued by the NHS to a British state  pensioned resident here is used for the issue of the Cyprus gesy tax exemption certificate... The certificate should be issued automatically but many didn't get it and had to ask for it
Chris Yorkie
Aha, so I need an SI certificate from the tax office based on my S1 certificate from the NHS, is that right?
Chris Yorkie
That's the Cyprus tax office that issues them I presume?
Toon
Yes it's an exemption from paying gesy tax
Chris Yorkie
Thanks very much for your help guys. Last question for now, I hope, doi need an appointment at the Tax Office or can I just roll up?
Toon
I cant tell you as I've not been there for ages and well  before COVID kicked in.. I assume that it hasn't been issued automatically... I would mail them .. they are usually pretty good at replies
Chris Yorkie
Will do, thanks for the help Toon !

Has anyone noticed that for GESY contribution exemption, with the 2021 tax-return form they no longer just ask for MOH exemption document date and its reference number. They NOW also ask for a 'start date' and an 'end date'. Does ANYONE know what these dates refer to, and where or how to obtain them???
Thanks
Toon
The start date is on the exemption form the end date is not ..however always use the end date of the financial tax year... That works for sure.... IE 31/12/2021

This was advised to me by the tax department

Oh, yes... a second question regarding the 2021 form, when I enter the amounts from my various pensions, the 'totals' line is greyed out. The totals for the various pensions (I have some from the UK and some from Canada) neither do they add up automatically, nor can I enter those totals on the 'totals' line. I've tried using commas as decimal points and I've tried using periods (full stops) as thousand-separators, as well as the other way around, and I've tried not using thousand-separators, but still the totals line stays greyed out. When I try to move on I get an 'error' message which is of no help. ANY ideas????
awaygood
Thanks for your reply, Toon. I'll give that a whirl to see what happens.
Toon
You must go to the end pages to calculate and if there are errors the system indicates what they are and where they are you will need to correct them then recalculate
Toon
I would further advise once you get it right print it out or save to the computer or phone and use that as your template for the following year and simply amend the numbers and dates accordingly
Chris Yorkie

@awaygood I think if you read the notes above the boxes that you fill in you don't actually fill all the boxes in, for example I have an S2 so I only fill in the first box with S1 and the medical box with my medical card no (haven't got the form in front of me so I can't remember exactly what it says)

Chris Yorkie

@Chris Yorkie that should be S1 and S1, not S2 - sausage fingers!

In order to complete the tax form you may need to use an exchange rate tool ....and as the tax office isn't too efficient  their official.rates are always late ....  the exchange rates i use and have used ever since I got here 8 years ago are in this web page ...I simple average these monthly figures for the year  and all has been fine and dandy  for us ...

NB they have only just approved my 2017 returns that is how far behind they are
Chris Yorkie
2017!!! No point in checking every day whether my return had been processed then :)
Toon
Nope

When you look at taxisnet it will.show submitted then accepted and that as much as it will show. .   But100% acceptance doesn't show for a good 4-5 years as thats when they will send a letter of formal.acceptance
