I rent a furnished house in the casbah in Rabat. When I woke up Thursday, August 5 I found the refrigerator was not working. The landlady lives in Sale and I have never met her. I pay the rent to her brother, Maati, who lives next door to me. He said he needed to call the company but apparently did not. My friend, Nabil, brought a repairman late Friday, August 6. He replaced some part and the refrigerator worked again. Late in the evening August 10 the refrigerator stopped working again. I told Maati and he said he would take care of it, but again did not. Nabil brought the repairman back Wednesday afternoon, he got the refrigerator working again, but it stopped working again about 5 hours later. I told Maati the next morning and he again promised to take care of the problem. Friday afternoon, August 13, Maati told me the repairman from the company would be here on Saturday, but no one showed up. Maati told me on Sunday afternoon that the repairman from the company would be here on Monday. This time he came late Monday afternoon, checked the refrigerator and said he would have to come back the next day, but he did not come back. Midday on Wednesday the landlady told me on the phone that she had bought a new refrigerator but I needed to waited until the next day because there was transport available. Thursday morning, August 19, two men came and took the refrigerator away but did not bring the new refrigeratoIr. A few hours later I asked Maati where the refrigerator is and he said the men had taken it to repair it. I told him his sister had told me the day before that she had bought a new refrgerator and now he was telling me something different. I demanded to know the truth and he assured me he had told me the truth. Thursday evening Nabil spoke to my landlady and she told him she had looked for a good refrigerator at a good price on Wednesday but could not find one. She said she was looking for the money to buy a new refrigerator Friday afternoon or maybe Saturday. This afternoon I sent this message to Maati four times, "Je veux le frigo MAINTENANT !!!" I have had no reply. Except for the four days the refrigerator worked I have been stuck at home, from August 5 to today waiting for someone to come take care of the problem. I cannot even go to the market in the medina to buy some vegetables and fruit. I had a freezer full of meat and vegetables but they are in Maati's freezer right now. I have been living on cheese, peanut butter, tuna, bread and  black coffee. This diet has started to effect my health and I already have a heart condition. I am at my wit's end and do not know what to do. Does anyone have any advice?

Hello friend i am really sorry for what happened to you . thoses people are playing this lies games and didnt take care of your rest , all we have to say is you need to find new home to rent because they will keep doing that to you untill you go away , and make the reffrigator work again for days for the new person that rent after you ...

Moving is an option but it will take time to find a new place and I cannot deal with this situation one day more. I need to have a refrigerator today. As I said, the diet I have been following for a couple of weeks is seriously effecting my health. The most important thing to me is my health. How do I get Maati and his sister to understand the importance of this? I am struggling with trying to understand why they are treating me like this. I pay the rent on time every month, I  am a very quiet person and do not bother anyone and I have not caused any damage to the house. Why are they treating me like this?

bella2bee

Hello,
horrible situation. Why not perhaps withhold this months rent money and insist they resolve the matter or suggest you will use the rent money to buy a replacement fridge.

FrancophileDavid

I paid the rent for August on the fourth so I cannot withhold rent until next month. If I have to endure this for even two more days I may do something drastic, not to even think about what I will do if it continues until next month. I  am desperate for an immediate solution to this.

touritox

Hey , they treating everybody like this not just you , you just need to look for house this days because your next pay time is on 4  , and if you have some money buy a small one and when you want go away sell it on facebook market .
you want to try bother the sister of maati and maati himself by calling every time in a day and see maybe they will bring it , when you call say i will die i am sick the heat affect my health and i need reffrigateur ...
Maybe that will help and i am sorry for this situation .

About three hours ago I sent Maati a message and asked him why he has not fixed the problem. Of course, I have received no response. He seems to be avoiding me. I have some news==some good, some not so good. About an hour ago Nabil brought me his small refrigerator from his house to use until I get mine back. Maati told Nabil that the refrigerator will be ready on Tuesday, maybe. It did not take the manufacturer that long to build it to begin with. Maati also said that I am responsible for paying half of the bill to repair the refrigerator and if I go to the police, i.e. the court, I will lose  because he knows the law. If he thinks I am going to pay even one centime, he is completely out of his mind.

Cathylesher

How long have you lived in the residence? If for any length of time then unless written in your lease otherwise , you are responsible for repairs. You can double check but I am pretty sure I am right.

FrancophileDavid

I have lived here since November 4, 2020. The lease says I may be held responsible for major repairs. i don't think repairing a refrigerator that was not in good working order before I moved in can be my responsibility. Less than a week after I moved in I told Maati the refrigerator was making a very loud noise like metal hitting metal. He jiggled the on/off switch and the noise stopped. He said the problem was that  the refrigerator was too close to the wall and the air could not circulate properly. The entire time I have lived here the refrigerator would go through cycles of making the metal-against-metal noise and then a loud hum  and then the metal noise and on and on.

Cathylesher

Lets see what the others say but in my experience I would pay the half and be glad he does not insist on the full repair costs. Trust me I have been through this type of thing with my villa owner.

Maati finally brought back the refrigerator, only 20 days after it stopped working and 6 days after it was taken away to be repaired. He told me not to plug it in for two hours, something about the gas needs to circulate, but the gas cannot circulate unless the refrigerator is plugged in. Duh! The shelf that goes in the freezer is missing. When I said that the repairman must have broken it because the shelf was in the freezer when the men took the refrigerator away, he said the repairman could not have broken it. Something happened to that shelf. I have not heard a hint of "I'm sorry."

FrancophileDavid,

Depending on how the refrigerator was transported ( whether standing up or laying down) you will need to let the freon settle before plugging it in. Anyway, with respect to your losses you sustained as a result of the damage to the food you had in the refrigerator and the discomforts from not having a refrigerator, take your monthly rent (e.g 500 drum) divide it by the number of days in the month (31 days) times the total days without a refrigerator (20 days) (500/31*20 = 322 drhm) and withhold it from September's rent.

bella2bee

Pleased to hear the fridge is repaired. FrancophileDavid is quite right.

I get the feeling that Maati doesn't want to talk to me. When he brought in the refrigerator he spoke very coldly to me. When he has passed my house the past few days and has seen me through the open door, he has just given me a cold stare. I guess he thinks I did something wrong. When Nabil came to pick up his refrigerator, Maati came in and told him in Arabic to tell me that the next time something goes wrong in the house, I will have to pay for it. I told Nabil that Maati can take me to court. I am just glad that my lease expires on November 4 and I am not going to renew it. He will lose a good tenant and there are not that many foreigners in Rabat looking for a place to live. The landlady at the last house I rented still has not rented it after 10 months.

Said Idouarab

Tell them that you are buying a new refrigerator in the next 24 hours if they don't provide you with a new one and just take the money of the rent. There is nothing they can do about it if you can prove that you have been reasonable with them. Buy the fridge 👍.

Said Idouarab

Next time you rent a property make sure that the contact states who is responsible for what and  stating time frames the Issues or problems should be fixed before you deduct the rent from them.

FrancophileDavid

I don't believe it!! The "repaired" refrigerator stopped working overnight--thirteen days after it was brought back!! I had to pour a liter and a half of milk down the drain this morning.

jahfrank

Go find you another place to live. Halas!

FrancophileDavid

Well Maati just came to check on the refrigerator, after three messages from me and a phone call from Nabil. He asked if I open the freezer a lot and I said no only a couple times a day to take out some meat. He said the refrigerator is set on high. I showed him a bottle of water that I put in the freezer yesterday afternoon and it was not frozen. He told me to wait and see if the refrigerator works, if not, he would call someone. I guess the refrigerator is going to repair itself. I am fighting with every fiber of my being not to go ballistic.

Another option is to buy yourself a refrigerator and sell it or give it away when you are leaving. There is your answer and quit the craziness with this guy.
