Residence Permit for partner

Post new topic

Hi there, I recently moved Malta from Australia. I am a dual Australian/Maltese citizen. My question is in regards to my partner who is a TCN and is currently here with me in Malta on a tourist visa. We have been together for a short time and at this stage we'd be applying as unregistered partners (planning on registering our partnership and marriage in future).

My question  is whether we should apply for a residence permit straight away as unregistered partners, and if so, does anyone have any experience doing so? How hard was it to get approved? Etc.. as much info as possible would be appreciated:)

Or, should we wait until we have registered our partnership, then apply for the residence permit after? The application process seems easier once your relationship is registered or we're married. I'm just mindful of the time due to my partners visa expiry date.

Thanks!

I would think at this stage your partner's only option would be by an individual application which would involve either obtaining a job and work permit or possibly self sufficiency, either would be residency on a yearly basis I believe.
As partners, unless Malta has relaxed their rules, you are likely to need to prove you have been together for a couple of years at least.

Thanks for your reply.

You can apply if it's been less than 2 years. You just need to prove that your relationship is stable and durable (according to identity malta website)
