Angelique,
I made the move a year ago from Dubai, after 22 years being resident. I cannot say it was stress free, but it does help being organized, and having a competent mover is key.
The local company should have an equally competent receiver, who takes care of the clearances on the other side.

I am happy to provide any details, as the company who did my move were spot on.

D7 visa - Minimum Resources

Hello.

I am Stephen. I retired early (54) and I plan on making the move to Portugal, specifically Covilha, around September 2023.
I will have a lot of questions regarding the D7 VISA process as some of the aspects confuse me.

I play a one string Diddly Bow guitar, Mississippi Delta Blues specifically. Unfortunately it got destroyed because I smashed it over the head of a rather annoying patron at one of my shows who requested I play Rebecca Black's "Friday". (I am now banned from that particular establishment).

I have been writing Japanese haiku for 35 years. My pen name is "Shigure Takamoto".

I can often be found smoking cigars and drinking mojitos at some of the finer establishments where I live. I also LOVE Conch Fritters for those of you who have been to the Florida Keys.

I went to relax and enjoy my remaining time on this spinning rock in space before I storm Valhalla wearing a loincloth and brandishing a machete.

It is nice to meet you all.

God Bless
Stephen

Hi Stephen, Welcome.

I agree with you, that Rebecca's music for teenagers "Friday", is not great indeed. In Covilhã you may not find Mojitos very often, but you have good wines and aguardente.

Ola!  I'm Milan and we (Milan & Nesit-wifey) just moved to Nazare on 14th of July, 2022.  We're here for a year or so and looking to buy a place long-term for our ideal home.  Need to do a bit of exploring to find our ideal space.

For now, WE ARE LOVING living in Nazare.  The food, the VIBE, the summer beach, sand, tourist, cafe & sunshine is JUST HEAVENLY for us!  Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia).  Lived in Southern California for 53 years mostly near the beaches of the South Bay area of SoCal.  Now, made the move to Portugal for the culture, cuisine, climate, infrastructure and affordability.

Would love to meet and hook-up with some like-minded souls in the Nazare (and beyond) vicinity to socialize and just get to know some folks from all over the world who now call this little paradise on earth HOME :)

Cheers, Milan

Hello all,

I am a French expatriate currently living in Lisbon. I have previously lived in France, Germany, Switzerland, Egypt, and the Philippines. I am not sure for how long I will be in Lisbon or indeed Portugal but I hope that this social network will be of use to me while I am here.
williamstony360

@geoSEAL : In general it is quite useful, and if you scroll through the "Info" sections provided there is a lot of useful information. However its greatest use is not what you take from it, but how you assist and contribute to others. By contributing your experiences, and assisting others with your contacts, helpful or otherwise, and by pointing out the pitfalls you faced, the expat community in various regions of Portugal can benefit.

Looking to buy or rent? If for investement it still makes sense to buy otherwise renting is more cost effective.
drroxanakerns

@lifeinvienna i assume you already touched land in Algarve? How was the moving process?

Hello everyone. My name is Adrián, my partner and I hope to move to Lisbon in the beginning of 2024; we currently live in New York City. She's a therapist, and due to the pandemic her practice moved to all-virtual, so she will be able to make any transition easily. I'm a graphic designer, and hope to convince my work that I can work from Lisbon, even if it is five hours ahead. We just joined and are going to start going through the treasure trove of information here, especially in regard to the D7 visa, which we understand is the best for "digital nomads." You'll probably see me in many of those forums, as we have about 10,000 questions to ask, and the consulate here in NYC isn't too forthcoming with information. Great to digitally meet folks, I find the stories of so many doing the same move a huge inspiration!

Cheryl

Hello pielypan,

Welcome to Expat.com 1f600.svg

Thank you for sharing your plans with us.

You are right, it will be easier for your partner as she can work anywhere. Hopefully, you will find the right words to convince your boss that you can work remotely.  1f61c.svg

Feel free to ask your 10,000 questions, members of the Portugal forum will be glad to assist you.

I invite you to read the Living in Portugal guide for expats.

Hello all!

My name is Mark and I created a Podcast called Where Do Gays Retire. It's available on all platforms such as Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Amazon Music, Stitcher, etc.

Its main objective is to interview expats from the LGBTQ+ community who have moved to their retirement destinations. If you're asking yourself why from the LGBTQ+ community, it's because there are many places and countries where being LGBTQ+ is looked down upon, discriminated and also illegal.

I have already done a successful podcast on Porto, and I'm now looking for someone who can be a guest from Lisbon and from The Algarve.

Please contact me if you are interested or know someone who may be interested.

You can find my podcast at wheredogaysretire.com/share

Thank you!

Mark

@Julien Good morning, I am Michael married to Maria and we spend time outside the uS in Toledo Spain.  We are retired and making plans to stay  5-6 months in Spain but are interested in Portugal for long term stays of over 6 months.   Tax burden in Spain to the tune of 45% has encouraged us to investigate Portugal next door.  I have been there and found the place so much like Spain that I am sure I. could adjust.

The topic of interest for us is the potential to reduce our taxes  by living in Portugal as NON HABITUAL RESIDENTS.    I  hope to learn from an American who has already done this.   My last resource was  Portugalist.com.   There and on other sites I reviewed the complex and lengthy process and found it very similar if not identical to the at of Spain.   I became a temporary resident there prior to the covid pandemic.   I have lost that status due to my return to US for the past 2 1/2 years.   As a cancer survivor I calculated my risk as lower living isolated in a townhome versus the closer quarters of our apt in old town Toledo Spain.    We are return to Toledo next month and hope to travel to Portugal to further explore out options during 5 months stay.

Anyone willing to share their experience and success with the NHR status and  resultant reduction of Portuguese taxation on retirement  income would be more than greatly appreciated!  Either way I hope to contribute to this site and its members by sharing my Spanish experience of 44 years,  coming and going to Spain since married in the smaller city of Talavera de la Reina in central Spain.

That's our situation in a nutshell.  I hope to hear for someone in Portugal.

Hello everybody! I am Vichy from HK. My family plans to move to Portugal in the near future. We already invested in the Golden Visa two years ago. But we are held back by the SEF after an extremely long delay. I come here to share our story to new comers.

JohnnyPT

Hi Vichy, Welcome.

Unfortunately your gold visa application, occurred at a time of pandemic, with many problems and delays involved. Please feel free to share your story here. It will be very useful for anyone looking for information on that topic.

@MrFitz

Good afternoon,

We are retired and studying our options to live in Portugal. D7  Visa and the non habitual resident clause are current topic of interest.  I wondered if you have run across tax related info for retirees from the US.

We are aware of a Portuguese  flat !0% tax on pensions (had been 0 % until approx. March 2020 if not mistaken.).

Pensions often refer to state of private corporation retirement benefits, but  our case is income from private personal investments and annual distributions as income.,    We suspect a tax attorney  in Portugal familiar with expats could be the only expert source of information that we need to guide us.    As you are from the US and may be retired or retiring I thought you might have come across this topic.

Any advice is welcome, thanks. Michael
