Hey everyone,

I will be moving to work in the Netherlands in 3 weeks. Since I'm staying more than 4 months in the country, I have to apply for a permanent BSN. The closest appointment date I managed to book was the 3rd of June, which is not ideal since I would need the BSN number to start working in April.

The HR person who's been assisting me told me the following: the process of getting a temporary BSN is quicker (you receive the
temporary BSN right after the appointment) than the process for a
permanent BSN (this one can take up to 3 weeks).
Therefore, you could make an appointment for a temporary BSN number
(the temporary one can be made permanent in the future).

I talked again with the city of Amsterdam and asked if there was the possibility to do this and they said that it would not be possible since it's not legal, they didn't have availability to book an appointment for a temporary BSN in April.

Anyway, I booked an appointment in Groningen for a temporary BSN in April 19th, and kept the appointment on the 3rd of June in Amsterdam to make the temporary BSN a permanent one. But I am unsure if this is the right way to proceed.

Can I get some advice from more experienced people?

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

BSN is the same thing no matter whether you have a temporary or permanent one; the only difference is the name of the database.  Some Gemeente's does not offer the temporary option.

Receipt of your BSN (and more importantly DigiD) letter does take a few weeks, but your BSN  number is on the screen in front of the civil servant as she fills in your details, just ask him/her to write down your number on a piece of paper so you can inform your employer.

As you've already been told by the Dutch Government, what you're contemplating is not legal, my advice would not be to do anything illegal, you can get into a lot of trouble in the Netherlands if you deliberately break the law.

Hope this helps.

@Cynic Thank you.

I'm feeling a lot of pressure from HR
and the person who's dealing with my contract, I already showed them
that my appointment is booked, but they really want my BSN before I
start working. Even though they know that the city of Amsterdam can't
really help me because there's no availability sooner.

I am completely lost on what should I do... I can't seem to accommodate the needs of everyone

Hi again.

Then the reality is you can't legally start work.  There may be other issues this may cause you, but that won't change this fact.  Perhaps you should look for a different job.
