Hi Ya'll

I am an American looking for potential places to retire. I have been looking within the US however I am open for some reason to see about Portugal. I have already made plans to for this Summer but I would like to perhaps come out in December next year. I have three weeks off. I do play golf as well so I'd have to have my clubs shipped but I understand the weather is not that great in Alcarve.

I am an avid golfer and I would like to golf while out there. Also I am prematurely curious about my retirement income if I were to live out there, where to live, etc. I understand Expats can get a grace period of mild or no taxation if I were to live in Portugal, but I would STILL need to be taxed by my US government.

Questions

1. Anyone know what place might be good (other than Algarve) for a 59 year old?
2. Is it true Portugal does offer a tax break for foreigners relocating to Portugal?
3. I would probably rent or buy. Renting seems easier.

Thanks

Just curious what about Algarve weather is not great?  All of Portugal is fabulous!
BongoBoy
I dunno. I am looking at Algarve because of the coast and the golf. I am thinking next December.
Are you from Algarve? How far is Faro from Algarve?

 Hi BongoBoy, Welcome.

You will know that answer by looking at any map ....
The answers to your questions are here on the forum. You can use the search function. And you have to inform yourself a bit better about the country, before you think about retiring there ;)

I am only at this point going to travel to Portugal obviously to get a taste of the culture, and see the surroundings. Thus far it looks fab.

I am an avid golfer and love the idea of a coastal retirement.

Fun to just inquire

Thanks

@BongoBoy,
Algarve is ideal for you, taking into account what you wrote in this post:

The golf courses were closed because of covid.... now most of them are already open.

____

Here you have many golf options in the Algarve, Lisbon, Porto, Azores and Madeira.

Hi BongoBoy,
To answer your questions:
- Silver coast including Lissabon offers in my opinion more as Algrave; the weather is a temperate one, not so hot as in S;
- Tax: yes, but you should apply accordingly and supply to the NIF authority the right doczúments, so request some prep and "home works" too.
- Rent is easier, who ´knows how long you will remain in the place?
Basically, this Forum is as an institution, with a lot of true and updated information, JonnyP makes very professional work here.
Portugal is fantastish!
Cheers,
Chris

@BongoBoy wr moved here 30 months ago from California- no regrets.  Portugal honors U S  Tax laws so you do not pay Portugal taxes on Social security income or retirement income.  Most accountants can help with you tax questions.

BongoBoy
Awesome. What part of California? Isn't there a 10 year limit on not paying taxes in Portugal if I am paying taxes in the US?

Also, are you retirement age? What part of Portugal do you live in?

Thanks

1.  Algarve weather pretty good in the winter, highs low 60's generally.  Gets quite hot there in the summer, sometimes over 100.  Inland quite a lot hotter than coastal.  I lived 2 years in Figueira da Foz, moved a few months ago to Foz do Arelho, mainly to be close to golf.  All of the Silver Coast is moderate in temps year round (no A/C in most places including mine).

2.  NHR offers flat 10% tax for 10 years and no double taxation between PT & USA.

3.  Definitely rent, at least to begin with.  Most ex-pats end up moving after arrival (like me).  Too much hassle to buy/sell, buy again, etc.

4.  Join FB groups where many of these topics are covered.  Like "Expats in Portugal Q&A" and "Americans & FriendsPT" plus several more.

5.  Good luck.
