Have you been to Vietnam?

I watched a youtuber who recently visited Danang and Hanoi and he was exclaiming how cheap everything is. Someplace else I saw that Nhatrang is the cheapest city in Vietnam! I was stationed there in '69 and '70 and it was called the French Riviera of the Far East! At that time another soldier told me one could buy an acre of beachfront property for $500 dollars US. I think I should have taken a chance and bought some, considering what has become of Vietnam. That's another story, communist fought the French and the USA so they could take over the whole country (unify) and they finally won (after getting millions of their own young men killed) and what was it all for? So they could turn it into what it is now, a capitalist styled tourist destination with high rise hotels and beachfront condos! Not very
Chairman Mao of them, huh? War sucks. "War, what is it good for, Absolutely NOTHING." Keep your kids outa that shit! See Nhatrang now http://nhatrangstreetfoodtour.com/top-6-interesting-things-to-do-in-nha-trang-city.html Nice, but a Viet client of mine in USA told me, several years ago, that he cannot go back there now cuz he would be killed. He had been a captain leading men into battle fighting the N. for several years. He ended up among the boat people who escaped the Nam. So I think it best that I never go there again. I will be happy with Philippine beaches.

When I travelled to see my girlfriend and daughter in the Philippines in May 22, I stopped off in Vietnam on the way back for 4 nights (it was meant to be 5 but Philippine Airlines changed my flight times from Cebu). I stayed in a 3/4 star hotel in HCMC, district 1, so near the action and most of the tourist sights. Although HCMC is difficult to get around with all the scooters and motor bikes, I really enjoyed my 4 days there. Food was excellent, a massive step up from the Philippines and I managed to avoid eating rice for my time there. The people were also very friendly and helpful (One example I can give you is that I was alone, trying to cross a busy road and obviously having trouble. A couple crossed just before me but the man looked back when half way across the busy road, saw me scared by the sight of all the bikes, came back and helped me cross).

I have seen many You Tube videos of Vietnam, particularly Da Nang and to be honest wish I had the option of living there instead of the Philippines. It is cheaper and I have read that it is the cheapest country in the world to live. Rent is cheap, food, electric and other bills are all cheap and Da Nang is cheaper than HCMC and Hanoi and is also split into the city side and the beach side and there looks to be a lot to do there. Hoi An is also close by and I have seen videos showing there also. When I was in HCMC, even though it is very busy, it is cleaner than anywhere I have seen in the Philippines and if I could live there with my Filipino girlfriend and daughter, I would definitely choose Vietnam over the Philippines and the central area near Da Nang looks perfect.

@Cherryann01 I visited HCMC in 2019 as a one week trip from here with girlfriend (at that time). Spent hours trying to convince Immigration that I was not Trafficking! I also noted and was impressed with how clean everything was in comparison to Cebu and Manila. The work ethic there is far superior to here. I found the food excellent and the people friendly. That being said, I like the fact that in The Philippines that most of the people speak English (enough) for me to get by, and that the signs are mostly in English. The local diet here of pork, seafood, and rice is similar to back home in Louisiana. I considered retiring to Thailand, which I love, but with my poor sense of direction, If I got lost on the streets of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or Phuket I would be wandering aimlessly, and lost for the rest of my life. Also, I think that the rules are far more restrictive in Vietnam (and Thailand) for retirees from another country. I considered Costa Rica before moving here, but the costs have skyrocketed due to so many wealthy Californians moving there. For many reasons, I think I am set here in The Philippines for the rest of my life.

Cherryann01
@talamban  I hear what you are saying about retiring in Vietnam, I do not think they have a retirement visa like most other countries. That would make the chance of me retiring out there slim to none. I did consider Teaching English abroad so doing a TEFL Course and applying for jobs overseas. I researched this a bit and there are opportunities to do the course in Vietnam or wherever takes your fancy. These are normally four week courses with the opportunity to actually do some of the course in a local school, teaching to foreigners. The problem for me is that you need a degree to teach in Vietnam although I believe from watching some you tube videos that it is possible to teach there without a degree. It would however then be harder to renew your visa if you needed to do so and you could actually be deported if found out.

I know what you mean about getting lost though, happened to me on two occasions while I was in HCMC and so so easy to do. Like I said I was staying in district one and I got lost coming back from the Opera House, ended up in district 3. I did finally manage to get a taxi back to my hotel though.

Regarding the food though, it is good for you that the food in the Philippines is similar to back home but I must be honest and say that I do not really like the food in the Philippines. The though of having to eat rice three times a day fills me with dread. On my visits there I never found decent bread, the bacon is not up to much, too much fat, Pork I like and we have similar over here in the UK but just call it Pork with Crackling. Trouble is pork belly over there seems to be missing the meat part, ie just fat and crackling. I had one of them Lapu Lapu fish last time I was there and although it was tasty, my fish looked like it had been on a diet. Tuna, anything with mango in it and the cloud 9 bars are the only things I really like to eat there that are cheap and readily available. I did have lamb on a few occasions on a visit to Tacloban once (XYZ Hotel).

I would love to go back to Vietnam and may stop off there again on my way to the Philippines. I have a kind of list of places I would like to see. Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi/Da Nang/Ha Long Bay, Hong Kong, Singapore and Phnom Penh are on there.

Take a Cruise,  good way to see which places are worth seeing further
Cherryann01

@mugteck  Not really my cup of tea I am afraid. Most cruises seem to offer only a few hours, maybe overnight in port besides the departure or arrival port where a 3 or so night stay may be included in the price. Besides I cannot really see myself sitting down to dinner on a posh cruise liner all on my todd. Also, and this is just my thought, but I imagine all these nice pictures of swimming pools you see on the videos and advertisements where there are just a handful of people swimming and relaxing by the pool will turn out to be like a crowd at a football match in reality.

Yes, Vietnam is cheap (although in some cases, you get what you pay for) and is very popular with Vietnam veterans from several countries.

No, there is no retirement visa, and lack of availability of long-term visas is a major issue at the moment.

Anyway, you can read threads and post topics over on the Vietnam forum:

There are a number of regular posters who (usually) try to provide useful accurate info, answer questions and generally help folks out.

You can get cruises for about $300/day for 2, includes room, food and transportation plus free entertainment on board.  Best swimming is done on the beaches.

We went to Vietnam in April, 2019 for two weeks in the north - Hanoi, SaPa, Hoi An and Da Nang. Really enjoyed it, agree with most of Charryann's comments. However, the smog in Hanoi stretched almost to the coast - it was really bad. We loved hiking in SaPa in the far north, and Hoi An was absolutely lovely. Having been to Palawan / El Nido, saw no need to visit crowded Ha Long Bay.

Food was great everywhere, clean, and they are indeed very industrious people. I felt not as friendly as Filipinos, though. We hope to go again, this time to the south (Saigon) and perhaps do a riverboat tour on the Mekong.

Has anyone been to Singapore and back to the Philippines? Is it hassle free?
FindlayMacD
I went on 5th to 10th of May, it was hassle free going because we both had proof of vaccinations, but returning to Phils we had to show proof a recent antigen test. Also proof that we were married and would be applying for Balikbayan visa, otherwise they wanted to see and onward flight ticket in Singapore before you could board the plane. I believe Phis has done away with the proof of antigen test now.

I definitely plan to visit the central region to see Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue. If I could retire there with my Filipino girlfriend and daughter I would but not possible.

I have been watching a woman who does videos on Vietnam (a bit like The Filipino pea). She is very good and covers a wide range of interesting topics. Just been watching one on pronunciation, very hard. Her channel is called What the Pho and her name is Van Vu. Apparently if you pronounce her surname wrongly it comes out meaning nipples, her words.

Thanks, Talamban - really appreciate it. We did go to the war museum and the Hoa Lo (Hanoi Hilton) prison in Hanoi.. the former was extremely informative, the latter pretty grim..
