Living in Puerto Plata

Post new topic

Was wondering if anyone can tell us about living in Puerto Plata vs Santo Domingo, Pros and Cons?

I can only say about puerto plata for I’ve never been to SD , but PP is very limited… you really don’t have 3-4 star restaurants here  but some are good and some are “who’s in the kitchen tonight “remember tethered no board of health here….lol ,  traffic is pretty heavy most times being there’s only two lanes in and 2 out , and one lane is used for drop offs and parking so it does get back up often,

Besides the hotel’s  ( resorts) in playa Dorada the the smaller ones in town (hotels ) are nothing to write home about, some are better then others… some go for $30 a night to $50 some a little more if your across from the beach .

The people ( some) that work in the the retail stores go for lunch at one and come back at 3 so if your looking for a certain person go before lunch…..

you hav a lot of poor here you can find them in certain neighborhoods that still have the tin roof’s and smell the Sewage , I would say from what I’ve seen 35-45% are working poor 25% re doing just ok and 20% have money, some doctors , lawyers , business owners the other 10% are just poor and broke

You have absolutely no hustle and bustle here  , I don’t know of the night life for I don’t go to clubs and I don’t hang out in bars ….it’s like the complete opposite of Sousa….slow and steady….🤣 hope it gives you a little insight of PP…. Like I said in another post you will see the guy w/ the  Horse and buggy’s once in a while

We live in Cabarete, a beach town east of POP and Sosua. We’ve spent some time in SD, but only a week at a time.

I’ll disagree a bit with the previous poster. While POP may not have any Michelin Star restaurants, there are quite a few that are very good in POP and even more when you include our area. Traffic is far better than in SD and while we don’t have any Hilton hotels, the ones in Playa Dorado are very nice.

Life here in Cabarete and in POP is good. We’ve traveled quite a bit around the country over the last several years and while we enjoyed our visits to SD, Las Terrenas, Punta Cana, Las Galeras and more, we kept returning to Cabarete.

I suggest you make a trip here and see for yourself!

Thank you guys great information!. The reason I am trying to see about different regions its so I can make some comparisons . I know SD more then any other city in DR but I was looking at apartment price in PP and its so much more cheap there then in SD. I do recall going to PP a while back and remember it was very crowded in the downtown area. My wife and I are real Foodies so SD may be the place for us with all the restaurants we like! Thanks again for all the info. I am not retiring until next spring so I still have time to look around., Santiago looked like e a good option also!

Santiago small Santo Domingo but did not find the restaurants that great. Punta Cana area has good restaurants - not as many as Santo Domingo but not the traffic.
