Thinking of retiring in Chiang Mai

Hello Dear Ytwater,
your enthusiasm is great and I do not want to cool it, however Chiang Mai is not that warm during the wintertime, so just be prepared for it.
It is the center of Northern Thailand, a great place to explore the surrounding territories, amongst them Laos, Myanmar and the hilly side of Thailand.
I am also on the lookout for a place like CM with some sea shore 'capabilities'.

The cool season in Chiang Mai, normally runs from mid-Nov through mid-Feb.

sea shore 'capabilities'?

Well, internal flights are 'cheap'.

I fell in love with Thailand during my first visit a few years ago. I am considering living there full time when I retire next year. I am coming for a visit to explore Chiang Mai for a couple of weeks in November. I am looking into hotels near the night market or just East of the old city in the $50 to $80 dollar a night range. It will be Loy Krathong so I am trying to book now. Any suggestion for a good hotel. Suggestions on apartment verus condo long term and which areas would be helful as well. Thanks

My Husband and I also do the same.  We plan to move to CM in early 2012. 

It's so thrill to know that you have a adopted Vietnamese daughter.  We're Vietnamese-American and are living in Orange County, California.

I just want to say thank you for asking some great questions for those of us who are planning to retire in Chiang Mai. I also live in California and still have a couple of years before retiring. As you know it is never to early to prepare for ones retirement. Please keep in touch and let me know how your move works out and any obstacles that you encounter. One of the great advantages that I have is that my wife is Thai/Laos and can speak both languages. Anyway, the best of luck to you and your husband when you make the transition to Thailand.

My Husband and I very much appreciate everyone who have/had given their time to share their experiences about CM/living in CM. We have learned a lot of things about CM. Thanks everyone for your kindness and advice, instruction...

We're looking forward to join the Expats group in CM.  We could not wait to see CM, and to meet the wonderful, generous people/friends in CM.

We will not move to CM until next year (2012).  In the mean time, we'll keep in touch.
