Hello everyone,

My family is from Hungary and I am trying to obtain Hungarian citizenship. I have been working on this for years but have hit a brick wall because I cannot locate his official birth records. However, instead of providing his birth records, I can satisfy the requirements by providing documentation indicating that he lived in Hungary sometime from 1929-1939.

I have located his official school yearbook from 1934 with his name and the classes he took. Does anyone familiar with this law know if this document would be sufficient proof?

Thank you very much for any info you can provide!!

@HCQ69 Good morning! I walked in your shoes about 3-years ago but I was required to go through the Hungarian Consulate in New York which took about 9 months; I lived in Massachusetts at that time and my parents never registered my birth in the states to the Hungarian government. The Consulate's networking database was able to locate my parents birth certificates and marriage certificate just by providing their names, dates of birth and marriage and the city. I learned that many of the original documents have now been electronically converted; both my parents were born at home with only family witnesses that have passed long ago. Unfortunately, in Hungary, citizenship has to be proven by blood line not where someone attended school so you might have a problem. The Hungarian Consulate was helpful and only charged me $80 3-years ago to file the paperwork and have their researchers look for the necessary paperwork needed to verify my Hungarian citizenship. Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions; my son just went through the citizenship verification process here in Hungary (it was a proverbial nightmare if you do not speak Magyar). His process took 5-months and I speak Magyar. Do not despair.
