Cyprus Approves Law on Naturalization of Highly Skilled Professionals

On Thursday, November 30, Cyprus held a parliamentary session during which an amendment to the Civil Registry Law was approved by a majority vote.

As a result, workers from third countries will now be able to obtain Cypriot citizenship in 4-5 years (depending on their level of proficiency in the Greek language) instead of the current 7 years.

Under the new rules, foreign professionals seeking citizenship through naturalization must meet the following requirements:

1. Legally and continuously reside in the Republic of Cyprus for the last 12 months immediately preceding the date of their application for naturalization (exceptions may apply).

2. Individuals with a knowledge of the Greek language at level A2 can apply for Cypriot citizenship after five years, while those at level B1 can do so after four years. Family members of these individuals will also enjoy the same rights and obligations. It is worth noting that a knowledge of Greek at level A2 refers to a basic ability to use the Greek language in specific and limited situations, with a very basic level of communication. On the other hand, individuals with a knowledge of Greek at level B1 can act independently and effectively in common communicative situations.

3. Applicants for naturalization must also prove that they have no criminal record, are not subject to international arrest warrants, have not been sentenced to imprisonment for any crime in the Republic of Cyprus or abroad, have not entered or exited the island through unrecognized TRNC territories, and do not pose a threat to public order and safety in the Republic of Cyprus.

4. Have suitable accommodation and a stable income to support themselves and their family members at a minimum of €2,500. This includes income from gainful employment on a full-time basis or income from other stable and lawful sources.

5. The applicant must demonstrate high academic and professional qualifications.

Applications are expected to be processed through an expedited procedure taking no longer than four months.
