Hi Julien,

I am an American and living in Amsterdam with my wife, who is Dutch.   I  worked a US government job supporting NATOr in Belgium from 2017 to 2020, then in the Netherlands until retiring last year.

My wife has shown me almost all of the Netherlands and we make great use of the museum pass everywhere.  Still haven't been to Zeeland or the string of islands off of the northwest part of the country.  We love to visit town centers and explore, then find nearby nature walks, as a way of familiarising ourselves with the many beautiful locations around the country.

We have also visited several nearby countries over the past few years and very much enjoy experiencing different cultures.

My job was quite intense with very long hours so I have not made much progress in learning to read, write, and speak Dutch, so I must turn my attention to that as soon as my burnout subsides enough to be able to study effectively.

At the moment I'm most interested in learning about my obligations to pay Dutch taxes, and how I offset my USA taxes from whatever the Netherlands taxes, and then how to submit USA taxes as well.

I hope to also meet and learn from fellow Americans in the area from this group.

Chuck

Welcome on board 🤗

It's a shame you haven't visited Zeeland yet (😜) as this is the province I grew up with but I assure you, when you do, you'll fall immediately in love with it.

Hopefully you feel better enough to get the grab of the language. If you need any help how to start, just give a shout out.

As for the American taxes concerns, there are many posts and replies here on the website.

Just use the search tool 🔎 .

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The immediate problem you will face is that unless you qualify for a Highly Skilled Migrant visa, there is an integration process (MVV) you will need to adhere to and part of this is you will need to learn to speak Dutch and pass an exam.  In addition, an employer can only employ in a role where no EU citizen can do that job; the examples you've mentioned aren't going to help you much.

There is a Dutch Government website that describes the details and processes you will need to follow; this link will take you straight to it.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I wish you the best of luck.

I hope this helps.

Hi!

I'm Kimberly. I am a licensed massage therapist from Washington State. I am very interested in working abroad. I have a cat that I wouldn't dare leave behind. How would one go about beginning the process of seeking employment/pet-friendly lodging abroad? I hope to start with Amsterdam. All advice is welcome. Thank you so much in advance!

Bhavna

@kimberlys65

Hello and welcome Kimberly !

Please note that I have moved your post to the Netherlands forum since your first choice is Amsterdam.

You will find a list of country forums here : https://www.expat.com/forum/

If you have specific questions in regards to a country, you need to post on the corresponding forum.

In regards to Netherlands, I would suggest that you read the Living in the Netherlands guide for expats (found at the top of this page), to gather as much information as possible. Contacting the Netherlands embassy in your home country is recommended to gather information about visa : https://www.netherlandsandyou.nl/web/united-states

If you have any questions, feel free to open your own topic on the Amsterdam forum to seek advice from members settled there.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

This won't be easy; massage therapist is not classed as a skilled job in the Netherlands, so your ability to apply for a work permit will depend on how much in demand your profession is percieved by the Dutch government.  My advice would be to register with LinkedIn and reach out to your peers living in other countries to see who may be hiring and where they are.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I am Ipek from Turkey. I have been actively seeking job opportunities in the Netherlands, especially in Rotterdam for some time now. I have received positive feedback on some of my applications. Although I do not have direct experience as an Assistant Manager, my teaching career has provided me with many opportunities to manage and organize various tasks.

@Julien  I am American, (gay-)married to another American. We're retired living in California. A few years ago I received my Italian dual-citizenship. Now we're considering moving into the EU, probably to the Netherlands.
