Hi everyone - I'm Rachel from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I'm 65 and planning on retiring to a Spanish speaking country. I'm currently in Madrid for 10 weeks to get a feel for the city and practice the language, and I'd love to hear about your expat experience.

Hi, I'm Rory, I'm Irish, and I'm planning to spend this coming year wandering around Europe, starting in Spain, and spending around 3-6 weeks in each country. I'm not sure if this fulfils the definition of "expat", or not, but up until now, besides my homeland, Ireland, I've lived for 1-5 years in each of Spain, Gibraltar, the UK, Austria, and Malta. Maybe I'm transitioning from expat to digital nomad, but I suspect we have similar issues, questions, curiosities, and can help each other out at times.

@Julien Hello! My wife and I are both from California and moved to Madrid in 2021. I'm on a work visa, so that was sorted by my employer.  (A process done during the middle of covid- not fun!) We are considering permanent residency after 5 years.  Currently navigiating and learning more about retirement options and all the tax implications.  High taxes in Spain as many know...or will find out.  However, cost of living and lifestyle options are the upside.  Many things to consider though.  Looking forward to reading more and contributing if I can.

Ciao Tutti!

My name is Giovanni (Gio) I'm a first generation Italian American. I was born and raised in NY and currently live in Washington DC with my Belgian wife Katie. We've decided to move to Valencia for a multitude of reasons but probably most importantly is the weather. We're planning on making the move to Valencia most likely within the year so any information or support this forum could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to meeting the group!

Hello there, I'm Denal Roy, and I'm wanting to go through this approaching year meandering around San-Antonio-Special, beginning in Spain, and spending around 3 a month and a half in every country. I don't know whether this satisfies the meaning of "expat", or not, yet as of recently, other than my country, Ireland, I've lived for 1-5 years in every one of Spain, Gibraltar, the UK, Austria, and Malta. Perhaps I'm changing from expat to computerized wanderer, yet I suspect we have comparative issues, questions, interests, and can help each other out on occasion.

Hi I’m Rocío. I just moved to Madrid on a Digital Nomad Visa and would love to make friends!

juliay

Hi, I’m Julia

My husband and I moved from Canada to Madrid last summer and are not sure how long we'll stay. Madrid has been amazing for our first expat experience, but we’re struggling to get our Spanish to an adequate level quickly enough.

I joined expat.com to look at other options and thought I would subscribe to this forum too, in case I can help others looking to move to Madrid.

Cheers

@Julien

hello Everyone!

I moved to Torrevieja nearly 35 years ago and I've been here ever since!

I love living on the Costa Blanca and I work with a wonderful team of people. (Hairdressers and beauty therapists)

We're actively recruiting for new professionals and we really want great English speakers (as most of our clients are happier talking in English!).

My colleague found this wonderful forum, so I'm hoping that maybe we can find some enthusiastic professionals who love what they do as much as we do!

Thank you so much for being here!

Kindest wishes for a very happy day for you all! :D

@GioDem Hi there! I just discovered this site and was delighted to read your post. I am in the DC area and also looking to move to Valencia this summer. I have an AirBnB booked for August and hope to find a long-term apartment. Maybe we can share our experiences?

LampoMax

Hello, I'm Heidi, from the Washington DC area.

I'm hoping to move to Spain this summer. My plan is to spend July in Toledo brushing up on my very rusty Spanish, then in August move to Valencia where I hope to find a long-term apartment. I am American but also hold an Irish passport, which I hope will make things a bit easier.

Any advice and insights would be appreciated! I've been an expat lots of times (Asia and Africa mainly), but I'm getting older now and, while my upcoming move is exciting, it's also terrifying on some levels.

Hi there! We're David and Tracey, and we're thrilled to share that we'll be settling into our new home in La Vacar, Cordoba on May 1st. Alongside our job hunt, we're really excited about the opportunity to connect with new folks and discover more about this wonderful region.

We absolutely love socializing and hosting get-togethers, so it would be fantastic to meet like-minded individuals who share our passion for good company and enjoyable conversations.

Hi all.  I'm retired and me, my wife and son's family are planning to move to the Valencia Community within the next year.  There is much to do and plan!  I am brushing up on my Spanish, as I love the language and culture.

Hi Guys. my name's Jade.

I lived in Spain for 4.5 years back in 2020, I moved back to the UK due to COVID.

I am looking to come back, But looking for work before I do.

I have my NIE and looking to get my residencia.

I'm open to any area mainland but if I could choose it would be the Costa Blanca/Murcia and Barcelona.

I have experience in Operations management, Property Management, and also Hospitality Management.

I'm not looking for a management position, as I would prefer to work along side a team then run one, but I'm more than happy to help where I'm needed.

I'm 31, problem solver and an extremely fast learner.

I'm happy to send my CV to any one with an opportunity.

I hope you all have a great summer!

Thanks Again, Jade.

Persefona

@tigranzak Hello. Did you live in Elche before ? Its pretty small town and could be tough to get a job here. Plus take into consideration that weather is very humid and hot mostly everywhere in Spain and impossible to walk around in summer (besides north of Spain and Catalonia). I do not know what your expectations but its better to be in more expensive place (or even another country besides Spain)  and to have more options rather than stay in small town with lack of opportunities (particularly if you have small children).

tigranzak

@Persefona I can work remotely, so it's not an issue. Yes, most of Spain is very hot during the summers, but then it's also very pleasant the rest of the year. Have you been in Elche?
