Good afternoon all.

Moving to Punta Cana January’ish 2025.

Have read a lot about tropical bows in Haiti.

Is there any concern, or does this cause concern for the government of DR?

How is the Haiti “issue” handled in DR?

many thanks for your replies.

planner

This is a very complicated issue.  The govt takes it seriously. We won't be getting into the issues or the politics of it here as it will violate our standards.

In Punta Cana it has very very little impact.

No issues in punta cana or really anywhere. The border has a huge military presence. The djabon market was opened for a day but highly monitored by police and military. I’m sure there will be a pop up issue here and there. Honestly the biggest impact right now is longer timelines and expense associated with building due to a lack of what was plentiful Haitian labor. I’m saying that all very matter of  factly.  My heart breaks for those impacted and for all that’s going on in Haiti. Sucks to simply lose the birth lottery.

@planner thank you.  i understand.

Sad and as mentioned complicated

Nanosaso

@ planner In regards to the complicated Haiti situation, what may members ask as the DR is a place many expats call home while others are considering relocating there. T

The situation in the neighbor country on the same island is concerning. It is totally understandable we don't want to create any kind of controversy or anything of that nature,

We wouln't want to censor valuble info we all may benefit from so long it doesn't fall out of the Forum's rules of content and common decency.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Haiti cannot be fixed. it will be like this forever. Its condition is its penance for overthrowing colonial slavemasters.  100 years from today Haitians will still be living in shacks without running water, dying from primitive diseases like cholera. That will be their perpetual staus quo, courtesy of people who will punish  them forever.

planner

Cruffman that isn't helpful and pushes the boundaries.

planner

What is it you want to know about the Haiti situation?

They are on the brink of all out civil war.

The DR govt has closed the borders.

The DR govt asked repeatedly for international assistance.

The DR govt is assisting international governments and organizations in evacuating people.

We all feel horrible for the innocent victims in Haiti.

What questions do we have? Again we are not rehashing the past or getting into political or racial conversations!

Nanosaso

@ planner The summary provided is very helpful and appreciated.

The question or rather concern is related to the news reports as the world watches Haiti's situation worsen.

Aside from politics and racial conversations and with respect to the civil unrest, suffering and turmoil in Haiti, the concern with regard to the DR is the international community position on the matter.

Ok, the DR closed the border.

However, the UN wants the DR open up it's borders for humanitarian reasons and accept the migrating Haitians as refugees instead of deporting them as illegal immigrants.

It seems the UN could care less of how this would impact the DR, regardless of the number of Haitian illegal immigrants already in the DR.

Being this the case the United Nations,  they are in effect imposing on the DR's soveringty as a nation to self rule.

Does anyone know if the UN actually have any authority to dictate how any democracy can run it's own affairs in this case labeling the Haitians entering DR national territory as refugees.

Are the Haitians considered illegal immigrants crossing the border or are they refugees crossing the border?

At this present day, the DR is overflowing with Haitians who are more likely than not to become the majority in the DR as the trend of migration weater refugee or illegal crossing in addition to the number of babies born from Haitian women in the DR.

The Dr has helped Haiti over the years.

Is the DR's government at odds with the UN regarding this matter?

Are the above questions and comments political in nature or are they deserving, safe and worthy to comment and ask in this Forum dedicated to the expat community residing in the DR?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

planner

This is very very political.  The UN has no right to dictate nor does Amy country. However, they can apply financial pressures.

This is a conversation that would be welcome in the "all things go" thread but not here. Let me find a link.

I just created a new "Anything goes" thread.  Have these discussions there please

@plannerexcellent idea, planner. to my way of thinking it makes no sense discussing the conditions in Haiti wihout examining why they exist..

Is definitely  2  different discussions.  Here we discuss effects on DR during this crisis.  Here we discuss any impacts on tourism, travel, food etc.

History or political discussions go in the other thread.

Thank you for answering my concerns. The new thread created is such a great idea!! It will definitely draw attention because it will allow fluidity of expression worry free of referee stepping-in giving out warning or issuing yellow or red cards.1f600.svg Just adding light humor. But, seriously, you are good at what you do and are very much appreciated.

In the new thread we may engage in plain and simple constructive conversations with all views at the forefront. What a delight! Thank you Planner. You identified the demand and created the space. Cheers!!

Now we may follow-up in that new thread for further discussions on which would be great. Once more, thank you for creating the new thread! and for answering my concerns in regards to the UN.

I would like to invite you to the new thread "Änything goes" that Planner created for further discussion on this political and historical topic as it relates to Haiti's perpetual crisis and in effect failed state.
