[Help Request] Sending a group of boxes to the UK from France

Post new topic

Hello all!

I've been living in Newcastle upon Tyne for the past 3 years (my visa just got renewed, yay!) and have been looking to get a collection of boxes (around 15, mostly books) sent over from France now that I have a place of my own.

I've been trying and failing for the past few months to find a solution at a reasonable price: all the services and companies I've looked at charge fees aimed at full-house moving, whereas my scope is much smaller (there is no furniture, nothing valuable, etc).

I've also been struggling to understand exactly what information I need to provide for customs purposes and what forms to provide it with.

If anyone here has information on the following subjects, I'd be eternally grateful!

  1. reliable and afforable services for shipping groups of boxes to the UK from France
  2. what information needs to be provide for the boxes to clear customs
  3. what forms need to be filled in for customs and/or taxes (bearing in mind all of the stuff shipped is for personal use only)
  4. what fees I'd be looking at customs-wise

Many thanks to all!

Fred

When you find a good shipping company, the rest will be answered.

If not, they aren't a good shipping company.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Try this link.  I have no idea if they are good, bad or indifferent, but they're an established company that already works across Europe; there are other companies that are listed in that link, you can also try them and ask for references.

In general, you mentioned you want to transport some books, from a lifetime working in Logistics, I can tell you that a sheet of paper is probably amongst the heaviest items to transport, and you will be charged by the kg and distance; a sheet of paper is generally regarded as weighing 80 gm - you can do the maths yourself,  If you are lucky enough to find a transporter looking for a return load you may save some money, but in general transporting paper/books is not cheap.

You will probably find it cheaper and easier to rent a car for a few days and going across yourself and bringing them back; it will certainly make life easier with Customs as if they do stop you (chances are they won't), then you make a personal declaration (what's in the box, how long have you owned them etc).  Books in general are zero-rated as far as taxes are concerned.

If someone is transporting the goods for you, you will need to fill in a Customs Form C3, you can download a PDF copy from this link; you'll need to print it off and fill it in by hand.

I hope this helps.
