moving from america to england, need advice please

Post new topic

madray

i need opinions and advice on whether or not i should move to england.
a little back round info may help you understand the appeal. My mother was born and raised there, and my father was born there and later returned to live. he brought my mother to the states, where i was later born. my mother missed england very much and i was raised with their ideals more than americans. it was her wish to move back home but she passed away 6 yrs ago. i have been there 3 three times and met my family.

if i move i will have to pay for the move my self. i will have a temporary stay but will have to find my own place and employment. i will have to leave behind my cats behind for 6months.

also what will the expenses be? does anyone know the cost of moving 2,500 lbs of furniture? what would my best option be to move it?

Hi Madray,

Moving abroad is always a difficult decision to make. Moving a large amount of furniture can become expensive, have you thought of finding a furnished or semi-furnished flat instead?

You could always move the pets with you, with a service like Air Pets or the like. You'll have to double check, however, on the red tape around moving an animal abroad, but you don't have to make the move alone. :)

The best thing you can do, regarding employment, is to start your research now and get the hang of UK CVs. UK CVs have a different style to the US, but that's only a minor detail really...

Also, try to make contact with recruitment companies in advance, in your niche, and let them know you are planning to move. The right ones will be very friendly and useful.

Hope this helps, and good luck with everything. :)

- Do you have a UK passport / citizenship?  If not, you'll need to apply for a work-permit & visa.  (If you know about the cats, you probably already know that :-)

- If you can find a UK employer to hire you and cover the relocation, that's ideal :-)

- I think our physical move (the packers, shippers, & delivery) cost around $5k, but of course there are many incidental expenses which can double that pretty quickly.  Most of the belongings our 3bdrm US home fit into a 20' shipping container (TEU), although larger homes may need a 40' (FEU).  Note that houses are smaller in the UK, so you may prefer to sell larger pieces in the States, and just hit Ikea when you arive.  And of course you won't be bringing over any electronics anyway :-)  Also note that it can take 2-3mo for the shipment to arrive (the boat leaves when the boat's full), so you need a place to crash while you're looking for a flat or whatever.

- There's a lot of fairly cheap or free furniture available over here, if you can pick it up:

Small correction there..The boat follows a tight schedule, your container leaves when your hired shipping company finds you a free spot on a boat..till then, your stuff sits in their warehouse or at the port. Make sure its insured..so any times I have heard it all going up in flames. And also..your things are at risk of getting sea water damage..happened to my stuff once.
