Indoor plants for Rio climate

Post new topic

Saudades

Hi everyone,

I wish to start planting some plant or something floral to keep indoors. (We have some works going on next door so I don't want to kill any outdoor plants with the dust going around at the moment).

Which is a plant species which is (i) simple to keep up with; and (ii) ideal for rio de janeiro climate.

Thanks in advance

James

Hi Krista,

While I'm lightyears away from being an expert on plants (in fact I have a Black Thumb) almost anything that will grow outdoors in Rio will also grow well indoors.

If you're looking for something that's going to be real easy to care for then you should be thinking of things like:

Boston Fern - here I believe it's called Samabaia
Split Leaf Philodendron - Costela de Adão (Adam's Rib)
Orchids - a bit fussy
Spathe plants - of which the Anthurium is a member

I also understand that African Violets and Chrysantemums also do well here if you want some pretty colors.

Once again, I'm relying completely on hearsay, since I don't know my butt from my elbow when it comes to plants. LOL

Oh, please, don't let me down! I was expecting My Guru to come to the rescue!

Thanks for this. Actually you are quite right on almost all of your suggestions. I googled some stuff in the meantime and found this interesting post.

Gotta get busy! Tchau!

By the way, how did the Humus turn out? Did you find Tahini paste or end up making your own like I suggested?

No, I let go the Tahini. I did the Hummus without it - uma delicia anyway :D

By the way, back on the topic of indoor plants, what's the chance of increase of mosquitos entering our abode?

James

Well Krista, if you go to the local construction material store just like I did, you can buy fly screen material rather inexpensively. Then there is ZERO chance of mosquitos getting in and feasting on gringo blood.

It's one thing that has always amazed me about Brazil, in a country where so many people get diseases like Dengue, Malaria, Yellow Fever all spread by mosquitos that you hardly ever see screens on windows here, especially when they're not costly. Go figure?
