Deputy Prime Minister NGUYEN Xuan Phuc  said 30% of the approximately 2.8 million public servants do not bring "any efficiency to their job".

Last year many provinces across VietNam have issued a ban on civil servants from drinking during lunch on working days.

In January, Deputy PM Phuc asked all the 63 provinces in the country to enforce the ban on public officials drinking during working hours.

I guess that's why they employ so many public servants, something that many Vietnamese businesses emulate, too.

Hi Jaitch,

What is your message here or how can it be helpful to expats?
I have to warn you also against political threads. You already know that.

Thanks

IF you had ever been to VietNam you would realise, as do all Foreigners, that government functions are like molasses on a cold day - very slow.

This can affect Foreigners detrimentally in so many ways. People often comment why is service, given there are so many civil servants in all offices, so slow.

That a senior government official recognises this is heartening, it usually presages government will take action.

It is difficult to have 'political' threads in VietNam. There is only one government, and one party, and any opposition is quickly stifled. If there were more than one party your comment would be valid.

If, as you claim, I know something, which you cannot affirm, your phrase "to warn you" should have been "to remind you".

In Vietnamese forum, many people said it must be 70% :D. Even they dont drink, some people think they don't need work so hard, because if they work harder, their salary is not higher.

I am civil servant too, but my salary depend on government partially, it also depends on my customers (students). And if I dont try to improve myself, maybe someday, I will don't have enough money for shopping :D.

It is with some slight amusement that I find myself in agreement with the fly. To begin with the information he provided is within the public domain but not all expats would be aware of it.

Secondly, any action taken by the Vietnamese government, however turgid, which might help to ameliorate the paralysing bureaucracy which besets Vietnam should be promulgated widely.

I see no reason to brand his post "political", it is merely information sharing.

After much consideration, I've determined Jaitch is actually a mosquito.  A male culex pipiens to be exact, which makes some sense, since that species isn't indigenous to Vietnam.  i.e., he's an expat mosquito.

Wrong. I have a friend who takes up-close pictures of bugs in VietNam - professionally.

If you ever go camping in VietNam, always use a hammock - never on the ground! And take a flashlight/torch to bed with you.

Just for a laugh, during the dark hours, switch the light on and shine it on the ground - then see how many pairs of eyes you can see - all with a mouth under the eyes looking for food!

Is your friend Dr. David Maitland?  Because he apparently took the photo in your avatar, and he says it's a mosquito:

It's a mosquito for sure. They're constantly on my skin withdrawing my blood. I'm at about 30% kill rate with my zapper.

When I was working in the Solomon islands last year there were things flying about that bit like crocodiles. We had to use 30% DEET to keep them off us. I was even bitten through my jeans more than once.

One of my uncles once told me if you rubbed chicken poop all over your skin, mosquitoes wouldn't bite you.  So I did, but mosquitoes still bit me.  Then I saw my uncle laughing.

So if anybody tells you chicken poop keeps mosquitoes away, don't listen to them.

Dan,

This is true.

I am a Nigerian scamster and my uncle died recently in a freak accident involving chickens, leaving 20 million USD in a private bank account in Switzerland. Please forward me all of your bank details so that I can transfer the money to a third party account and I will give you 10%. Thats 2 million dollars tax free.

Yours sincerely

Come on, I know you're a Brit.

Another time, that same uncle told me to feed ground beef to my pet cow.  You shouldn't try that either.

Stupid cow.

The feeding of animal products to cows is what started the mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) epidemic off and eating the meat of cows that had brain or spinal cord content is believed to cause variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD).

Did you eat the cow?

If I recall correctly, that started and was primarily an issue in the UK.  Just saying... :)

Yep. It was all about feeding processed sheep protein - sheep that had "scrapie" to cattle. But don't worry I am not wracked with guilt about it.

Nor should you be.  Compared to the Boer Wars, that was nothing! ;)

Or indeed the American slave trade, the genocide of the American Indians, the dropping of the second atom bomb on Japan, My Lai and.... maybe we should take this discussion to PM.  ;)

khanh44

Try feeding dog meat to dogs.

Well I think that the original topic is now dead anyway and there is no malice in our exchanges - at least not from this end

Nga, some day, you, Matt and I should have some beers.  I assure you, after an hour, your head will hurt and you'll be begging us to stop. :)

Maybe he got scared off when I mentioned DEET
