Traveling with a guitar

Post new topic

turkeyshoot56

Some airlines actually want me to buy a whole seat for my guitar. One in England wanted an extra 179 pounds to take it at all.

Does anyone have experience flying with a guitar out of Riyadh without the hassles and expenses?

Thanks

I did during my final exit in 2012 from another region.

I could say I was lucky because other than my acoustic guitar, I had my bag and a trolley as my handcarry baggage(s) and I've had no hassles (flew with Saudia)

If you only have your guitar and one more hand carry, I think it's acceptable 🙂

This...also friend had similar experience, other than the hassle from security saying music is forbidden blah blah just ignore them.

Right, pretend like you didn't hear him say that music is forbidden blah blah lol!

You're flying out of Riyadh anyway, so it's a lot easier😀.

Goodluck!

Thanks. I'll email them to make sure...

This is what their website says:

"Saudia accepts Sporting equipment and musical instruments as checked baggage if it is properly packed or inserted in special bags and its weight shall be counted as a part of free checked baggage allowance, in case the weight and/or the dimensions are more than the standard free baggage allowance, excess baggage charge shall be collected as Saudia policy."

Just make sure to get a hard case

Yeah. I just talked to someone in Riyadh. Will get one on Friday. Saudi Airlines said it must be checked, but if all checked luggage is under 30kg, there is no extra charge.

For international ticket on first/business class via Saudia, free baggage allowance should be 2pcs and should not exceed 32kgs (each)

For economy also 2pcs (23kgs) each

Plus your handcarry, so I think you're good to go. The free baggage allowance is also shown in your ticket🙂

So, is that a total of 46kg for 2 bags, or 23 for both?

conniesky

total of 46

If you will check-in one pc, it should not exceed 32 kgs

turkeyshoot56

Thanks. That should be more than enough. Just to clarify. That's with Saudi air, correct?

conniesky

Yup, am talking about Saudia Airlines😀

Make sure you cover it up really well. I just don't trust those guys at the airport.

I fly Saudi Air, Philippines Air out of Riyadh with Guitar in hard case..doesnt matter carrier..it is a shot in the dark!  All about the customs guy...the carriers will let you take it to customs and depending on the guy working and his attitude will decide if you can take it on the plane.  I have even been allowed into the terminal and before boarding... the right guy sees me entering the gate and runs up to take it...other times i get on the plane ..(both carriers) and the stewardess's are more then happy to accommodate. NEVER had to buy a seat or have an extra charge.  If they take it for "check in" make sure they plaster it with "fragile" stickers.....good luck  Also....loosen your strings and wrap your headstock in a hand towel for airline travel.
