major car trouble, what are implications if ditch the car and fly

so much trouble getting parts, and getting them installed, scanners not updated...
transmission and computer...and in light of driving dangers...thinking about ditching the car...heard a friend who's car was totaled, mex officials refused to recognize the paperwork, charged him something based on vehicle value and he can still fly into mex, but never bring a car again...
we will never bring a car into mx again anyway, but wonder if anyone has any stories, perspective on this....we are seasoned residents here with family and a home for half the year, but driving is not worth the stress and risk... any thoughts? thanks
