What is happening to Cabarete Beach??

Post new topic

brodies2013

I've been hearing things about Cabarete's beach being adversely affected recently...posts on FB, e-mail from friends about it.  What's going on and is it a cycle...I've known many 'come and go' beaches...but, I didn't think Cabarete was one...

ChristieE

I have not seen anything. Wonder if they mean the ongoing dispute between developers and people who want the entire beach accessible 24/7 to everyone?

brodies2013

Someone said there's no beach???  Maybe that's what they mean?  I had lunch on the beach in July...didn't notice anything...maybe the development of the adjacent properties was what they were referring to...?? ChristiE: Having your Sunday morning coffee and expat.com session too, I see....hahahaha

I spent a month on Cabarete Beach in January 2014 and was alarmed by the extreme erosion I witnessed. There were actually 4 foot drops from the remaining beach to the beach below as a result of erosion.
At that time I chalked it up to sea level rise and resulting beach erosion.  Sea level rise is not uniform around the planet. Some areas of the oceans have higher water levels than others and the Atlantic seaboard is one of them....

I saw that 4 foot drop this year at Playa Granda...but that is seasonal...and I have seen to lesser extents in previous years...I just hope it's not due to development on properties around that area interfering with the natural ebb and flow of the sands...

I was just in Cabarete on Monday, and all was good.  Quiet, but perfectly normal.  The walk into the ocean was much more gentle, so it actually seems improved to me.  Maybe it's a "troll" trying to get people freaked out?  I know Sosua beach took a beating and lost some sand a while ago, but that is now much better too.

Well...that's why I asked...our neighbors were at Kite Beach and said the beach had completely disappeared...then I saw some postings on FB...no trolls...I was confused...still am a bit...maybe it was hyperlocal issue??

I did a daily 7 k walk on Cabarete beach for a month in 2014 and erosion was happening. It is a global phenomenon. Santo Domingo is noted as one of the cities threatened by sea level rise..

UncleBuck

Haven't made it to Kite Beach, so that issue may be true.  Sad if it is though.

Yeah...I re-read the email and I think they were talking about Kite Beach (her husband is learning Kite Surfing) but they were also talking about having been in Cabarete for a weekend...so, I think that's where I got confused...supposedly Kite schools/shops are closing???...

UncleBuck

From what I've heard, kite surfing in general is on the decline in Cabarete.  No one seems to know why, but over the past few years, there has been a noticeable and steady decline.

It has something ti di with new construction - breakwall- or something east of Cabarete effecting ocean currents and patterns.

That's all I know.

PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC — “My business was here,” said Julio Rodríguez, standing in the sand. Right where he stood, there used to be an structure made out of wood, from which excursion packages were offered to tourists since the 1990s.

In 2006, he looked at the turquoise water of the Arena Gorda beach, some 25 meters away from his post. He enjoyed watching foreigners walk by his artisan shop. A few years ago, he realized that the sea was approaching progressively, until the waves hit the pillars of his structure and it ceded. At age 60, he watched worriedly how the other 63 establishments in the area faced the same threat.

Encuentro Beach is the site of a highly protested (by local) proposed luxury development. They have bull dozed down some shacks, block off entrances that were previously public. I don't know a lot about it, but I know people are upset about it on other blogs /forums I read.

Does anyone else think it odd that these replies today are logged in the system as happening either tomorrow or 2 days from now?

My computer recognizes my post at the time I made it, but others show into the future.

I don't see that at all honey. Which post specifically?

Oh wow, that is what happens when you spend 2-3 weeks traveling in Asia in September - sorry everyone! I wish I could blame my idiocy on a time warp, but alas, no! That being said, my wife and I did notice the time line was off last year; glad it seems to be working now.

I hope you enjoyed your travels!
