Ice Ice Baby!

Post new topic

RockyM

Ice is one of those things us 'mericans take for granted. We fill out drink cups to the brim with no thought. Europeans are a bit more judicious with this staple, as they are with other things I guess. My question is how do you all procure your ice in your RD homes? Do you have an attached ice maker with your frig, have a separate ice maker, buy from someone and transport home?   Thanks, Dave  :0)

I have a fridge with a bottle of water, mounted on top of the fridge, that feeds the water line to the ice cube machine in the fridge. When I build our house I will have a three filter system to purify our own water and then will have it feed directly to the fridge water line.

For those of us who like cold water, I just pop a bottle into the freezer about 2 hours before a meal - yummy, and no messing about.

Right now we buy bags. But they take up the whole freezer. I am going to purchase a countertop unit from Amazon and have it delivered. We'll see how that works and report back. I was going to get it locally but they cost quite a bit more than in the states.

I have an icemaker in the fridge feed by the electric stand-alone pump. I throw out the big lump of ice every month or so and the icemaker makes me another nice lump.

Hahahahaha. Most of us have those little ice trays that you fill with water and voila, ice a few hours later.

For a party or get together you call the colmado for a bag or half bag of ice.

RockyM

When I was a kid we had the little metal ice trays with the handle. You pull the handle up and it breaks the ice for you. Usually ended up a big mess though.
Thanks for all the information everyone! We haven't started building yet, but I think we may lean toward a whole house water purification system. And maybe get a dedicated ice maker. Ice will be muy importante (Denise likes many frozen drinks)! LOL

RockyM

ChristieE,  Denise was looking at a countertop unit on Amazon as well, but it was very expensive. Let us know how it works out.

Those are available here as well. They are not cheap. Another consideration is electrical costs.  An icemaker is another consideration!

You made me laugh about the metal trays with the handle, have not seen one of those in years....

I imported a Whirlpool French Door bottom freezer refrigerator with ice maker and use bottled water with a pump attached to it for the ice maker. Works very well and is quite efficient for its size.  Actually better on electricity than my previous DR purchased much smaller refrigerator.  No need to purchase ice unless having a party.

I saved at least 4 hundred dollars over buying the same model here.

I need a handy portable countertop ice machine, but I'm undecided. There has been a lot of research on the internet, maybe that's why I'm confused.

I've had two for about  year and half to 2 years back in the States one at my house and one at my lake house and I use a Non-Stop. It's amazing thing it makes ice so fast. Also you just got to remember you need to clean it out with vinegar every month to month and a half because it sucks in air for the coolant so whatever is in the air kind of gets cycled through the machine. But it takes nothing to clean it and trust me the ratio of ice and makes pays for itself probably within a month down here. That's if you're having a lot of people over for drinks and stuff. But yeah mine I just coming on about a year and a half now and I haven't had a single issue with either one. The other several different models and of course the Chinese knockoffs but the ones I use is lg

Ours is a smaller countertop model and is self cleaning. It makes enough ice for 3-4 cocktails pretty quickly. We make it as we use it. When we get ahead we put it in baggies in the freezer or set the little ice bucket in the fridge. If you don't empty it it just melts and recycles the water back into the reservoir. The ice is softer than bagged ice. Ours was about $100. I can send you info if you like.  I ordered from Amazon.

Brewpub56

This one is only $124 @ amazon. I couldn't get my address off the link. So this is a Walmart link.

Remember these are heavy and if using a mail forwarder the shipping will be expensive.

These are available here at under 200 US

Brewpub56

Ours is not heavy at all. Well under the price and weigh limits. Good to know you can buy them there though. We looked but I didn't find one.  We basically use ours when we have people over.  A bag of ice takes up too much space in our freezer.

We ended up buying one before we left the US and brought it with us in the container. Looking at the date Dave (Rocky) started this thread, it was right around the time I bought it. I got it for about 40% less as a Black Friday purchase, and it was before GE bought it from Opal.

GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker

I love the nugget ice - it melts a bit faster, but I like the soft, chewable ice (like Sonic or Chick-Fil-A for those of you from the US). This doesn't have a freezer to keep the ice cold, it just keeps making new ice if what is in the bucket melts. That helps with electric use! It can be programmed, so I have it making ice every second or third hour from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. If I know we're going to be away for a chunk of the day, I can adjust the schedule on my phone so it doesn't waste electricity.

When our container arrived last fall, this was one of the first things I unpacked!! I love my ice maker!!

Actually, I just found an ice machine review on this site this morning, a lot of useful information has been given, I think I need to decide which brand to buy today.

So you're right, this can be a choice as well. It's also a very cheap option.

If you're going to use ice trays, these are great! We have these in our rental apartment.

I imported a Whirlpool French door bottom freezer refrigerator with an ice maker and cold water dispenser.  Works well, is much bigger, and uses less electricity than the poor performing refrigerator I purchased locally. Ice is from bottled water and an attached on demand pump I purchased on line that feeds the line to the ice maker.
