future san miguel de allende resident

While we have often visited San Miguel, we live at Lake Chapala and in the Chiapas  Highlands and have resided in those places for 20 years. Our two homes are approximately 1500 kilometers distant from one another and we often  drive between them  but not now. Do as you please but do not  underestimate the dangers of traveling about Mexico during  the time of COVID.  Good luck to you.

My bigger fear is not covid, but how the Mexican drug cartels are totally taking over once quiet, safe neighborhoods, with devastating effect.  My friend is building a new home in what was a utterly calm and serene area, but now there are multiple senseless deaths, car burnings, and everything thing that comes with it.  Even the mayor is totally run by these cartels.  Anyone want to substantiate his claims and experiences in certain areas?

I understand, Rob and these sorts of environmental  changes from area to area are difficult,  even impossible, to predict as your friend found out the hard way. At Lake Chapala and in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas we have not experienced these crime problems over the years but who knows what the future holds. Good luck to you.

Really, nothing beats the flexibility that renting gives you. It is unfortunate that local conditions can change over time, to the point that you might not at all like an area anymore. If you rent, then moving is easy. Selling real estate in Mexico can be a very slow process. I do understand why people want to buy, but for me, it makes more sense to rent.
