Best time of year to explore DR

Post new topic

Just_chillin

Hi everyone,

My name is Norm. My wife (Shauna) and I are planning to move from Alberta Canada to the DR hopefully in the next 4-5 years. I am wondering what time of year is the best to explore and research DR in person to figure out where we want to buy and live.
We are currently looking at Punta Cana as we heard that it's the safest area. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Norm and Shauna

welcome to the forums!     Safety is a relative term. I have lived all over this country and done so  safely! Its more about how you behave and what you do than the  area. That being said  you do need to assess all areas you may want to live in.

Best time of year -   right now none.  We are in a pandemic.

Normally  if you come during high season its much more expensive to stay. If you come in shoulder season you will get the best deals!   Shoulder season is  after Easter to  end of June.   And then End Sept to  mid december.

Hi Norm! I recommend visiting an area during different times of the year if you are planning to live here year round.

Rainy season is very different weather-wise and activity wise; if you are in an area with a lot of tourists (Dominican or international) then high season will be much busier than the rest of the year (high season - more traffic, busier beaches; low season - some restaurants have shorter hours or are closed more days of the week).

Before picking a place, you'll want to experience it a number of times, so try not to visit at the same time year after year!

Check out the attached 'Go Dominican Republic' website which is the official tourism website.

It is full of information and if you go to frequently asked questions you will find something on weather which can help you understand the climate here.

I agree with ddmcgee's post; you ought to try your preferred destination at differing times of the year. Some people find the high humidity and heat during the months of August through October (peak tropical storm season) uncomfortable but that is the tropics.

The island is bigger than you may realise by looking at a map due to topography and does have climate variations, albeit your preferred destination is fairly typical of the Caribbean generally and does benefit from the prevailing breezes throughout most of the year.

I do think the climate is less predictable these days and the country has had some wet periods and periods of drought.

Ni Norm - I am currently back in AB by Red Deer. PM me if you wish. I am back here working to raise money to build in Moca, where my wife is from. Cheers.

I visit the DR 4 or 5 times a year since 2013 at all different times.  I really don't think it matters except in tourist areas during high season. I travel all over the country and I am moving there next year. I am sure you will get a lot of answers here.  Have you been there before.  I would suggest at least 5 trips to different parts of the country.
