Seaweed issues

Post new topic

While coming to DR for many years, I've noticed seems to be growing issue with seaweed. Would love to find out opinion of locals on what areas there are affected more/less. Also is that projected to be just a temporary issue or it is becoming permanent? During one of my trips it was so bad that it was impossible to even go swim in the ocean. And if this problem will stay - it will affect tourism big time.

Global warming effect and seems to be getting worse.

It affects the whole Caribbean. Even gets to beaches protected by reefs. If you fly over the Caribbean waters you will see brown lines everywhere waiting to come ashore somewhere driven by currents and wind.

Not easy to manage. Even pontoons cant stop it passing to shore. And it stinks.

Had a huge problem a couple of years ago when working at a high end resort in TCI, South Caicos. Even Mexico - Cancun- suffers badly.

The Sarragossa Sea has expanded and split up as the Gulf Stream changes. Bad for eco systems too.

We are seeing an increase in seaweed now in PC but playa Bavaro (mostly resorts) is doing a pretty good job cleaning it up.  It depends upon the resort.  Otherwise, for instance, go to Playa Macao and there is NO seaweed there.  Miches, no seaweed...

From my experience, Bayahibe, Coson, Bonita and Punta Rucia suffers less as do Azua Bay. Winds and currents being the factors such that more sheltered locations are less affected. Interesting that Macao is clear. Wonder if Samana Peninsula is helping? Rincon is often piled high.

Macao never has seaweed, neither does Esmerelda and I think Uvera Alto is the same although I don't go there very often.
