Buying new windows for a home

My wife and I are in the process of building a small casita on our property in Cabarete. We hired a builder to start the house to gray wall and we got an estimate from his window guy for the sliding glass door ($500) but he wants $800 ea for a 2ft by 5ft window. Would anyone here know anyone who does windows and window installs? The reason the builder is stopping at gray wall is because I need something to do while I'm there.

Those are ridiculous prices!  I am sure someone can recommend options for you!

Thats what I thought. The slider is 8ft so I can see paying that, but the windows are too much. Id like to find crank outs.

Hi , that sounds way too much. , I’m in puerto plata and I had a quote for sliders and the guy said $500 also , so that’s sounds good , but you have to be careful with the material , tell the guy you don’t want the flimsy aluminum you want the thick sturdy aluminum , my neighbor bought sliders and they were so cheap you could almost pull them off the track and when the wind blows they rattle like the single pain windows from the 1940’s so be careful , also if you have a southern exposure you might want to consider the tinted ones which I was glad I put in the bedrooms …. Looking out you can’t even tell there’s a tint but it does stop the heat from coming in   The window quote sounds why too high , I know they’ll tell you the crystal is very expensive and the materials have to be imported  , but how could it be more then the sliders ……?I mean the sliders have to be 7-8 feet also ..🤔 , I had 10 -15 windows put in by one guy and it was around $1200  , the window sizes varies ….and it didn’t really matter weather they were sliders  or crank outs ,  then i had another 10 put in in by another guy because the first man was to busy and the price was roughly the same now I don’t have the receipt with me because I’m in New York now  but I’ll try to reach out to my friends over there and see if they could find out something  , because I still need another 20 windows for the upstairs…lol  ,  I found that there are many window guys  around so shop around and tell the guy to put your sliding glass door in for yer and you’ll think about the windows for latter…… good luck 🤞

There are many factors to consider when buying new windows for a home. The type of window, the size, the style, the material, the price, and the installation are all important things to think about. This can be a big decision, and it is important to do some research before making a purchase.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for new windows:
- The type of window: There are many different types of windows, from double-hung to casement to slider. Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it is important to choose the one that is right for your home.
- The size: The size of the window is important both for aesthetics and for practicality. make sure to measure the area where the window will be installed before making a purchase.

I’ve had a half dozen window guys coming to my house  and been to 4 places
That makes windows and not one person could tell me where I could buy double hung windows  , and not one installer even knew what a double hung window was….. there’s only two windows that people know of  , crank out and sliders .
     I would really appreciate if anyone could tell tell me where I could find
double hung windows

I am in Moca and will be looking for windows. I see plenty of pics of new homes with the type/style of window I want but thing all mine will have to be made. Anyone know of such a place in Santiago?

There are a few places you can look for double hung windows. Home improvement stores like Lowe's or Home Depot typically carry them, or you can order them online from a variety of retailers.

EDITED TO REMOVE LINK -  please note this is the Dominican Republic. We do not have Lowes or Home Depot!

@jacobber It would be nice if we had those stores and their selection! Unfortunately, we don't, so ordering from either would involve the expense of shipping and import duty.

All of our windows were made. We have 9 fixed panels (privacy panels in showers, high windows that are just for light), 4 horizontal sliders, 6 that tilt out, and then 7 sliding glass doors. I've never seen any double or single hung windows here.
Tippj
Yeah let me import 20 double hung windows
And maybe some furniture from
Raymour & Flanigan  , oh and don’t forget the lighting……🙄

It‘s further away from Cabarete, but our neighbors got all new sliding windows with good fitting screens for very good price from a guy in Nagua. I will try and get the contact info and post it here.

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I've seen double hung windows on some of the apartment buildings, so I know that they have them in the Dominican.

I can’t even find a window installer that ever saw one……

@Tippj
Double hung windows allow for more flexibility in controlling the air flow so definitely a plus...please let us know if you find a supplier!

@brodies2013   please!

This is the place where a bunch of us Cabrera Expats also got our doors and louvered security windows (that have steel bars built into the louvered glass panes…and were inadvertently tested with my 6’4“ husband crashing a ladder directly onto a louvered pane and it came away without so much as a ding…which sadly wasn’t the case for my husband…😜) But they have been excellent in terms of exact measurements, etc. And they make normal slider.
