Wanted: advice

Post new topic

Enjoythemoment

Shortly i am planning to move to Vietnam to live there.

Can anybody (preferably dutch people) give me advice about:

1)

How to do with retirement payment. Is it better for me to put that money on a dutch bank account and have it transferred later or would it be better to have it deposited directly on a vietnamese bank account?

Do I just pay tax for my retirement payment in the Netherlands or is it cheaper to have it taxed in Vietnam and ask for exemption of tax in the Netherlands?

2)

Does anybody of you have experience in transferring small personal belongings from the netherlands to Vietnam? Can anybody advice me a reliable, not expensive company who can do this.

Kind regards

Regardless of your nationality, there is no retirement Visa in Vietnam.

Have as much fun as possible on a 30-day tourist visa, then leave the country.

if you want to come back into the country, you can apply for a new tourist visa, but you cannot have an extension or a renewal of your Visa while you are inside Vietnam.

Dear Oceanbeach, thanks for your fast reply but luckily I do not have any concerns anymore about my visa. Everything has been arranged. 1f60a.svgSo if anybody can give me some more information I would be very happy with that.

Hi there Enjoythemoment, and welcome to expat.com!

I'm Canadian, not Dutch, so I can't give you the same sort of first-hand advice that one of your Dutch compatriots might. I can, however, in answer to your first question p̲o̲i̲n̲t̲ ̲y̲o̲u̲ ̲t̲o̲ ̲t̲h̲i̲s̲ ̲s̲i̲t̲e̲.  Scroll down to Article 18 Pensions and Annuities, or alternatively you can read all the way down to there (enjoy1f62b.svg). Rather dry and boring stuff, that. The Netherlands and Vietnam do have a reciprocal tax agreement.

There's a̲l̲s̲o̲ ̲t̲h̲i̲s̲ ̲s̲i̲t̲e̲'̲s̲ ̲s̲e̲a̲r̲c̲h̲ ̲p̲a̲g̲e̲  (I input only Vietnam tax) from Gov't of the Netherlands, N̲e̲t̲h̲e̲r̲l̲a̲n̲d̲s̲ ̲W̲o̲r̲l̲d̲w̲i̲d̲e̲  webpage. I'm sure your Netherlands gov't can advise you on the tax rates for either option.

(Apologies in advance if you were already familiar with these sources)

To answer the first part of your second question, that would depend on the type of visa you have already arranged. Household goods are acceptable under some visas, while not acceptable under others. There are visas for Viet Kieu, for spouses of Vietnamese citizens, etc which allow for the importation of used items, duty free (not new items).

If shipping from Holland is anything like the cost of shipping from Canada, "not expensive" will never apply. Even ground shipments from Canada are (very!) expensive, taking 3+ months to arrive, on average.

Enjoythemoment, when you do eventually receive definitive answers to you questions, y̲o̲u̲r̲ ̲r̲e̲p̲o̲r̲t̲i̲n̲g̲ ̲b̲a̲c̲k̲ ̲w̲o̲u̲l̲d̲ ̲b̲e̲ ̲g̲r̲e̲a̲t̲l̲y̲ ̲a̲p̲p̲r̲e̲c̲i̲a̲t̲e̲d̲  and would without doubt help future expats.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help to you at this time, but should you have further questions please do not hesitate to ask. Lots of friendly members here.

Again, welcome to expat.com

@enjoythemoment, welcome.  Great to hear that you’ve found an arrangement for your long term stay in VN.  Quite a few expats have resulted to marriages which can be the most costly option at the end.
