Overstay Tourist Visa Through "Act of God"?

Boat service to Phu Quoc suspended as Typhoon Saola brings thunderstorms

(Link VN Express)

"The Maritime Port Authority of Kien Giang Province said the services are suspended from Saturday until further notice."

(There were HUGE whitecaps all about the western shore of Phu Quoc Island today)

What would be the repercussions of such an overstay? How to rectify?

My advice to the travellers I spoke with today here in Phu Quoc was to visit the nearest immigration office (Duong Dong, in this case) immediately upon its opening on Tuesday after the holiday weekend.

My guess? They'd still have to pay the overstay fee, and would probably be instructed to fly out (no land crossing) from an int'l airport, immediately. Not what they wanted to hear, I'm sorry to report.

I invited them to join expat.com, so perhaps we'll hear of the outcome.

Any members have experience with "Acts of God" or natural disasters resulting in an overstay? Any leniency, consideration, or empathy offered by officialdom?

(One thing I've learned since moving to Phu Quoc is that the whole of the island is dependent on goods shipped over from the mainland. This includes meats, fruits, vegetables, oils, everything! People at the market today were buying with a frenzy. Most all of the food stalls were empty by noon, people buying days worth instead of their usual twice-a-day trips to the market for fresh food and socializing. No boat, no food)

Still looking a bit choppy out there. Any members make a crossing today?

It will be nice to get fresh fruit, duck, and pork at the market again.
