Is possible to extend my RNI from 4 to 6 months?

Good evening,

in February I will start a 6-month internship in Amsterdam. My employer has asked for a BSN to me. I have found a temporary place to stay without a rental contract, so without the registration.

So I think that for the first months I'm gonna stay in Amsterdam, I will activate the RNI registration, which we know has a maximum duration of 4 months. In that way I can receive my BSN.

But what happens after the 4 months, in order to not lose my BSN? Can I extend my RNI for other two months? Or do I need to find other place to stay for the last two months of the internship, in which registration is possible?

Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

BSN is your identification number from registering with the Dutch Government.  RNI is the temporary database for those with no intention of staying in the Netherlands for more than 4 months; there is no real difference between the 2 registers regarding the information you have to provide and not all Gemeente's offer access to the RNI.  You have 5 days from arriving to make an appointment to register with the Gemeente, at that stage they will decide which database is relevant to your circumstances.

The importance of where you stay is relevant to whether that place is permitted for residency.  We have heard of people registering from hotel addresses; the important thing is that the landlord has to give his/her permission.

If the circumstances of your stay in the Netherlands change during your stay, then you must notify the Gemeente.

I hope this helps.
