What alternatives to MM2H are available please?  I would like to be able to stay in MY for 3 months each year without going through the MM2H programme.  How easy is it to find a nice serviced apartment or long-term hotel deal?  Join me for coffee in Penang after 16 Nov?

UK citizens can enter Malaysia with a tourist visa stamp on arrival and remain there for 3 months automatically unless the regulations have changed. You don't need MM2H for that.

I'm not sure about Penang, but in KL, serviced apartments are easily found for short term tenures. Typically foreigners/expats arrive in KL and stay in these kinds of places for a month or so while searching for more permanent places to live. There are several of them all around KLCC/Petronas twin towers.

For hotels in Penang, It might be possible to discuss with them directly about a special rate for long term stay. You could also just ask agents about short term stay apartments. If they don't know any, they will usually ask other agents and in case of success they'll split the commission. Commissions are paid to the agent by the landlord.

Another alternative is to go to the Management Office of an apartment building and ask them. Often the management will know in-house property agents who know about things like this or can negotiate with landlords.

Great advice thanks.

Tourist visa:  I assume my EU passport will work as well as UK so that looks like a good option and would work well for me as MM2H does seem to be a rather bureaucratic process.........  Would the three months tourist visa only work once in each year?

Long-term hotel stay.  I'll check first with the hotel where I will be staying as it is highly rated then ask other expats for recommendations.  I'm sure the hotel would be grateful for a direct deal rather than paying the hotel websites' excessive commission......

Apartment/Serviced apartment:  I'll check with management agents as you suggest.  Also if this is a usual custom, will ask for local help to check also with the "doorman" of interesting apartment buildings to find what/when apartments may be available.

Thanks again.  I'm looking forward to the start of my new adventure next week......
