English cemetery Recife Brazil

Post new topic

I've recently visited Recife which I enjoyed very much. I also visited the english cemetery in Santo Amaro, Recife to see my great grandfathers grave, captain Daniel Thoms.
I was very surprised to find the cemetery well maintained and in very good condition despite its age and comments to the contrary on the internet.
I met a caretaker there who was very helpful and friendly. His maintenance of the grounds, headstones  gardens and chapel has kept the cemetery in exceptional condition.
I would very much like to find out who or what organisation is responsible in order that I can convey my heartfelt thanks and perhaps meet representatives on my next visit.
Many thanks
Robin Thoms.

Well how interesting is that?!? I´ve been frequenting Recife since 1981 and never knew of the cemetery - but then I don't make a habit of visiting such places'. Anyhow there's some stuff written of the place by the Fundação Joaquim Nabuco here: http://basilio.fundaj.gov.br/pesquisaes … amp;id=342 . I was surprised to see that General José Inácio de Abreu e Lima (1794-1869) is buried here. Apparently the cemetery is kept up by some elected unpaid curator. So cool that you went to visit your great grandfather's grave.
