Dear SG Expats,

Due to the on-going circuit breaker measures during the recent pandemic, I am considering going back to my home country (Germany) for a while. I would continue working remotely for my SG based company.

Since it is not yet sure when the borders into SG are re-opened again for work pass holders, I would like to know what is the maximum number of months you can stay outside of Singapore and working for a SG company, without losing your EP status.

P.S. My EP is still valid for another 2 years.

Cheers, Jasmin

You can work beyond 6 months abroad if your employer allows you to stay overseas. It’s not going to make any change in your tax status here as you have to pay local income taxes based on your salary earned. Further details you should approach your HR if you need any guidance.

Prior to doing this, consult a good German tax advisor experienced in such international matters, because when working for a remote employer from Germany, you may become liable for German income taxes and social security contributions - which, as you may know, can easily eat half your Singapore income!
