Hi beppi, surya, and others who view this post,

A little bit of background from me:
I am an Indonesian male, currently in Singapore and have been living in Singapore for more than 15+ years of my life in SG, studying from primary school, all the way to University. My family members are holders of Long Term Pass and PR.

On March 2020, when SG border closed, I was in Indonesia and stuck in the lockdown for 7 months until I recently decided to take another course with one of the private Us in SG, therefore I am given the student pass to enter back SG on October 2020.

I applied for a job and managed to get offer letter last year 2020 October, however, it was rejected and appeal twice and rejected again with the same reason: This candidate is not eligible for a work pass, please look for another candidate. Previous HR tried to contact MOM however MOM did not divulge any reason.

Recently, I was received a job offer this January 2021, and within one day of applying for pass. the same rejection came back.

I am confused as I contacted MOM regarding the issue but they told me to ensure the SAT details are input correctly (they are after we checked), and asked me to tell my HR to call them back. HR told me they received multiples encounter where MOM just say that to divert applicant's attention and they won't disclose the information to employer.

HR told me to have a strong appeal supporting document, and ask me to go and ask for a Members of Parliament's (MP) letter.

Was wondering how strong is a MP letter and since MP are elected leaders of the citizen, and representing citizen and government bodies to some extent, the letters should be powerful enough for MOM to reconsider the case?

And is there anyone who faced the same case as my rejection and managed to get an approval?

Or is it possible cause I just received my Student Pass and the expiry is few years later, therefore MOM did not proceed with my application?

Please kindly advice! Sorry for the long post.. I hope to able start a job.

The following are my ideas of potential reasons, but the actual one will probably never be known if MoM doesn't tell you:
- Without applicable work experience or rare niche skills, it is very difficult to get a work pass. Do you have any?
- Some industries, where there is sufficient local manpower and maybe even unemployment, are basically closed for foreign job-seekers. How about yours?
- Coming on a student pass and changing your mind so quickly was not a good idea: The authorities don't like that and might suspect you abused the student pass as a backdoor into the country (without real intentions to study).
- If your parents became PR and you (male) not, it will automatically be assumed that you did this to avoid National Service. In this case you have almost no chance to ever get a work pass in Singapore, sorry!

I doubt that an MP letter would change anything, and also that an MP would actually write one for you (unless you are somehow exceptional, like a community leader, star athlete, known artist, or similar). As you said, their commitment is with their people, not foreigners.

I would advise you to finish your studies and, if the problem persists then, look for a job elsewhere.
