US Taxes for US Expats

For US expats who have a residence permit, and are paying income tax in Portugal, do they still need to pay US Federal and State taxes the same way as if they were residing in the US?  Can they take advantage of the US-Portugal tax treaty to avoid double taxation?  This is going to be much more of an issue with the NHR being discontinued.

Thank you,

Omid

Talk to a knowledgeable US CPA that knows international taxation. They can give you the best advice.

Dear all.

I am non European citizen.  Chilean. Can anyone recommend a good tax lawyer expert in NHR for Non European residents? Ideally if it is in Porto, Portugal.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you.  Very useful all of them. But I could not find a name of a Tax lawyer/accountant I could contact in Porto/Portugal. Do you know of anyone?

@omida

Yes. The double taxation agreement applies. You will only pay US taxes on the balance owed to the US (if any) above what you paid in Portugal.

Thank you @nac25!
