Healthcare in the European Union

Post new topic

Julien

Hi,

how does the healthcare system work in the European Union ? Is it efficient ?

What are the main differences between public and private sectors?

Is it recommended to purchase private health insurance in the European Union?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience !

Hi there,

That really depends of each country.
The health care system in the UK and in Spain are wonderful (in Spain you must speak Spanish to get anything or anywhere really) However, I find the French healthcare system abysmal! Even speaking French well. If you already hold a EU passport you might not need health insurance for certain countries. Having said that, if you to France, even with an EU passport you'd need a mutuelle (a type of health insurance) but get something better than a mutuelle, get a very good and comprehensive health insurance, especially if you have children.
I talked poorly of France's healthcare but I do have to admit that overall EU's healthcare is up to high standards and better than most other continents in the world.
It's better to get a local insurance company than a world wide insurance! That is if you're going to work and settle in that said country.
All the best.
