only 12 days of annual leave?

Post new topic

NicoleMonika

Is annual leave in Vietnam typically only the legal minimum of 12 days a year or do companies tend to be more generous? How many national holidays is there in addition to the 12 days?

It all depends on who you work for.

Legally: 12 annual leave days; AND

Public holidays:

1 January

5 days Tet festival - Lunar new year (since 1 Jan 2014)

1 Hung King day - 10 March Lunar year

2 days for 30 April and 1 May

1 day for National day on 2 September

If you are foreigner, plus 1 day on National day of your citizenship. If you hold 2 citizenships and none of it is Vietnamese, ask your employer for 2 days plus...

My fiance got this strange rule at her workplace don't know if it's typical with some companies in Vietnam. 5 days off if you get married.

4-10 days for Tet (depending on where you work).
   1    "     01/01 New Year Day.
1    "     10/03 of the Lunar calendar  Hung Vuong Day.
   1    "     30/04 Unification Day.
   1    "     01/05 Labor Day.
   1    "     19/05 HCM's Birthday.
   1    "     02/09 Independence Day.
   1    "     25/12 Christmas Day.

If you work for the government, then just take away Christmas and New Year.

As noted earlier, there might be more days off, granted to you on the part of your own employers, feel free to add to this list.  These all are I can remember, at this time.

I didnt know VN labour code has a day-off on HCM's birthday :|

Take that back, I remember that there is only about 4-10 days for Tet, depending on your employer.

Aibiet, you want your birthday on there too, don't you?

Anniest

It's typical to have annual leave only 12 days to start with. Then depends on the company's rules and regulation, annual leave will be increased ( 1 day after every 2 years, for example). Some companies will offer 14 days when you first sign the contract, but then it won't increase until much later.

I would prefer working on my birthday as I can receive birthday gifts. Haha. I am hard to please too. Just try to get it right. VNese employees are not allowed by laws to have a day-off on HCM's birthday.

After each 5 years of employment for "the same" employer, plus 1 annual day.

All of those days stated above are pretty good..per Wikipedia,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Vietnam

Public holidays in Vietnam are days when workers get the day off work. Prior to 2007, Vietnamese workers observed 8 days of public holiday a year, among the lowest in the region. On March 28, 2007 the government added the traditional holiday commemorating the mythical Hùng Kings to its list of public holidays, increasing the number of days to 9.[1] As in most other nations, if a holiday falls during the weekend, it is observed on the following Monday.

January 1 - New Year -    Tết dương lịch

From last two days of the last lunar month to 3rd day of the first lunar month - Tết (Vietnamese New Year) -    Tết Nguyên Đán

Largest holiday of the year, occurs around late January-early February

10th day of the 3rd lunar month    Hung Kings Commemoriations    Giỗ tổ Hùng Vương - New holiday since 2007, around April (adopted by the government on March 28, 2007[1])

April 30 - Liberation Day/Reunification Day - Ngày giải phóng    Fall of Saigon and reunification of Vietnam in 1975

May 1 - International Workers' Day - Ngày Quốc tế Lao động

September 2 - National Day (Vietnam) - Quốc khánh

So it appears you don't get a paid day off for Hồ Chí Minh's birthday if you are a public servant.

Best job to work for?  US Embassy....

You get both the Vietnamese AND the American holidays off.  About 20 per year....not too shabby!

http://vietnam.usembassy.gov/holidays.html

And that's just the holidays.  Imagine with the 3 week vacation and the 10 day sick leave.

Wow, a month off!  Dang...I should get a job with you!

NicoleMonika

thanks for the answers. guess i'd try to negotiate something with the employer along the lines of "more holidays, less salary". 12 days is waaaaay to little for a spoilt european :)

thanks guys, for the input!
