Cambodian border closed?

Post new topic

paulthepom

Air Asia and Uk.Gov sites are still showing the border is open to Cambodia . . .  I have a flight booked for 22nd April from Malaysia . .  . any information would be very helpful  cheers

GuestPoster8404

I too would like to know about the border situation, although not traveling, I certainly think Vietnam where I am will not reopen soon?

JoeKhmer

All questions that cannot be answered.

Stay put and wait.  Have patience.

Cheers

Thanks Joe. I’m hoping to get to cambodia on 15 May or so. I’ve read conflicting reports on the border with Cambodia. I’m in Vietnam as well. A recent letter from Cambodian Immigration  says from 31 March all Cambodian land and air crossings are closed and any visas are not being issued. To enter one must visit embassy or consulate, have travelers insurance to cover covid-19 and be tested negative. For me I am going to stay put in Hanoi. Traveling now is a mistake. I may extend my visa here another 90 days but the cost here is more than a air ticket and getting a ER EOS in Cambodia. Best to live day by day.

JoeKhmer

Your last sentence sums it up ;)

The Border is definitely closed. They were looking at reopening on 18th April but has now been moved to 30th April.

hdgh29

You have any more info on that? Like, when they reopen, still need visa before arriving, health certificate and insurance? Or back to visa on arrival?
cheers

I have only heard rumors so I hesitate to say anything. Vietnam is finishing three weeks of enhanced social distancing today and will gradually re open businesses and economy in a phased approach. This has been announced by the prime minister. We have had 0 new cases of covid-19 for 5 days here.

Domestic flights may start soon as well and with higher frequency than before. That’s been requested by civil aviation here. The final part is international flights and in and out from other countries. This is still locked and visas are not being granted for anyone.

I think Cambodia will do something similar personally. The countries here have too much trade and business that crosses borders.

The first part about Vietnam is not rumor. It’s been reported by news agencies and the city governments. The part about Cambodia just seems to be the best practice  approach. It’s all slow but sure. Gradual and phased changes. I think Cambodia will not open borders until June or July myself. Just have to wait and see.

hdgh29

I am hoping  for mid to end July. My plan was to head to Siem Reap, but I would settle for Saigon for a while if I needed to. I am sure there will be bars around the end of Pasteur St that still remember me!

JoeKhmer

Vietnam and Cambodia are both closed,  Cambodia until April 30 and maybe longer depending on the government.

Domestic flights will restart soon no news regarding international flights.
No visas on arrival.

Cheers

I might be down to Saigon then. I have friends there I’d like to see. I’d meet you if you buy the first beer. 😄

First beer is always on me  :D

GuestPoster8404

Hahaha. Hey Joe. When I make it to PP I’ll buy the second beer. Now looking like August. Do you know the Carolina bbq place by Russian market? I found it by accident awhile back. Owned by an American. If you like American style bbq really good! Not sure if open now. But beer by the river when I get back to PP.

Hah,  although I usually don't throw stones this place is a stone-throw away from my place  :D

I'm not a burger eater but we could meet at Azure (search it on St 123 RM area) and grab a real pint of beer for one buck   ;)

Stay safe mate!

Hi Joe. I met some nice people here in Hanoi from Poland who are hoping to cross the land border into Cambodia from Vietnam in late May. The last I read was that borders were closed 30 days from end of March into Cambodia. Have you heard of the borders opening for land or air entry? They are traveling slowly from Hanoi to Saigon over the next three weeks and want to visit PP around 22 May.

JoeKhmer

Hey

I waited a few days after May 2 but there is no news regarding opening of borders for foreigners.

So it will probably be extended until May 31st.

Apart from that there is still the requirement for a covid-19 negative test plus a 50k insurance that covers covid19 expenses. Plus anyone entering needs to go in quarantine for 14 days.

No visa on arrival,  so if your friends can get a visa at the Cambodian consulate in Vietnam they might have a chance to get in.

I doubt they will get a visa this month but let them try,  never know.

Cheers

Hello,

I live in Cambodia but for about the past year I've been in Kazakhstan.  I want to return to Phnom Penh on June 22.  Any information on whether that will be possible, and what sort of documentation I might need, or even what agency in Phnom Penh I can contact for this information will be greatly appreciated.

JoeKhmer

Hello.

As visa on arrival is not possible at the moment you need a visa from the embassy.  So contact the Cambodian consulate and they will give you information about requirements to enter the country.

Good luck.

So sad to read your honest reports. Was thinking even though I speak very little Khmer, that my companion Mr. Benjamin Franklin could open doors and allow me into the country since I have a DL Visa.

I'm afraid Mr. Franklin won't be of any help,  neither does your Vietnamese visa facilitate a return to Cambodia.   ;)

Cambodian Border definitely still closed. Expect 14 Day Quarantine going from Cambodia to Vietnam or visa versa. Also you will need
COVID-19 Clearance Certificate but good luck with that as there does not seem to be any facility in either country willing to give them out let a lone do the testing. Vietnam Airlines will begin International Flights on June 1st but where are they expecting to fly to 😂. Latest grumbling from the halls of power is June 1st may see the borders reopening but don't hold your breath and make sure you have the clearance certificate and 14 days worth of clean underwear with you.

What are my chances of getting from Kuala Lumpur back into Sihanoukville? Or even into VN? Thanks.

Nothing has changed for Vietnam, here’s what it still says on the (updated) website of the VN embassy in the US:
The Vietnamese government is still suspending entry into Vietnam to all foreigners, including people with a Vietnamese visa exemption certificate.  Only Vietnamese nationals, foreigners on diplomatic or official business, and highly skilled workers are allowed to enter the country at this time.  All persons entering Vietnam must undergo medical checks and 14-day quarantine upon arrival.

Inquire if there is a flight available.

If so get a non-covid certificate.

Get a 50k insurance that covers covid-19

If you got all this be prepared to be tested in PP and wait for the result.
If negative you're free to go anywhere.
If positive you will go into quarantine .

That's all.

BTW I'm in Sihanoukville right now,  wonderful!

From the Reuters article, it is not completely clear how long the waiting for the test results will be, i.e. there might be a quarantine even for healthy arrivals:

Despite the easing, foreign visitors would still need to have a certificate no more than 72 hours old confirming that they are not infected with the novel coronavirus and proof of $50,000 worth of health insurance while in Cambodia, the ministry said.

They also would be quarantined for 14 days after arrival at government designate place and tested for the coronavirus, a ministry statement said, but did not specify where.

“All passengers, both Cambodian and foreign, who are travelling to Cambodia, are admitted to waiting centres for the COVID-19 tests and that they are waiting for results from the Pasteur laboratory,” Health Minister Mam Bunheng said in a statement, referring to respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.

You just need a health insurance that covers at least 50k:

There is no access available into Cambodia insurance or not. I think it is very irresponsible giving out false information.
It is simple. The borders are closed no entry to foreigners in Cambodia.
After a meeting with government representatives yesterday they were sheepishly pointing at June 1st but only to those countries declared COVID-19 Free. Currently in this region Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia have that status. Malaysia & Singapore are not.

JoeKhmer

Read the link I gave,  much more clear.

Borders will open but depending on certain conditions.

I said already read the article well.

People will have to wait until test results are known.  If negative they can go,  if positive they go in quarantine.  Clear as water.

Indeed, in this text it’s clear. You have to wait for the test results, but if they come back negative, no quarantine. These are very reasonable conditions, but it could be difficult to obtain a health certificate, depending where you live.

I have heard from some people who entered Cambodia from Japan in the last week.  They got a medical clearance certificate from a local medical center and bought basic travel insurance at the airport that stated unlimited medical coverage.

I have health insurance, but I wouldn’t risk coming to Cambodia without an official (looking) certificate concerning COVID 19. If they have doubts about its authenticity they will simply put you in quarantine, that’s my guess.

hdgh29

Probably right, although if coming to KOW for the long haul it doesn't matter too much. If it's a short holiday then sure, it's not worth the trouble.

hdgh29

If someone came to Cambodia as a tourist under the current rules,  certificates, quarantine etc, what would be the situation if they wanted to get an ER (retirement) visa?

DoctorMason

I have already an ER Visa expiring in Jan. Currently in K.L. and looking forward to getting back to KH.
