My husband says that he will need his passport translated to arabic as well as a visitor visa. Contact the Lybian embassy in DC to get this.

best way for your friend to get to Libya is via any travel agency located in tripoli. They charge an upwardly sliding scale amount of money but quickly obtain a tourist visa once you give them a copy of the passport.
As of last summer the People's Bureau in DC was not issuing tourist visa. Now it seems maybe they do, I am surprised (pleasantly :-)?)
You'll be better of using a local travel agency (sorry I don't have the information of the one we used for a friend last summer.) It costs money but works.

Ok I will check that out, around how much money do you think it'll be so I can be prepared.

It started with 600 LD, then down to 400 then up to 800, 1000 and then I think we ended up paying around $500 !!!! At some point we hit $1400: i really don't think there is a set price. J
When these amounts were floating around we were not sure if we would be really able to get a visa. .. Then it happened :-)! No serious paperwork, no hassle (other than perplexing price changes!).
I hope this helps, it really works for tourist visa.

You can try this travel agency in Tripoli. You can use me as reference if you wish.

Can anyone confirm whether the translation is still required? It would be strange that only Canadians would be exempted..

This is posted on the Libyan Embassy website:

*** Please be informed that as of December 10th, 2010 translation of Canadian travel passports to Arabic is no longer required for entry visa applications.***
