We all know not all expats have a time without Complications. I was in the Situation that I had lost everything and did not even know how to get to the Embassy . A Friend I had known for may 4 month did help me here and I was happy that there has been someone who did help me .
I want to give that back!
So if there is any Person not having a Place to stay I will give this person a Place to stay for some Days
If there is any Person who needs only a person to talk let me know here I will forward you my Phonenumber  .

That's very generous of you to offer good to know there are people willing to help others.

Very good to read and happy you not only received the assistance needed, but wish to "play if forward" as the saying goes. It's an awesome offer and touches on something that interests me. Even though I'm still getting settled and planning on going back to Canada for work for a while, I think of folks like TInker. A group of volunteers situated around the DR who are willing to take the time every so often to drop in on others or lend a hand as you are offering would be great. Amazing how a short visit every so often helps out....cheers

One Thing I see many Times here in the Dominican Republic People like to stay in Areas where surround by Folks from their Country but most do not even make Friends or bringing out a social Circle most want to live the same solitary Life like in their Country . Social Life does happen in a very small Circle . People who come to migrate here in the DR do not find any Help and in many Times even their own Folks scam them . It is a shame that Expats in a Country where who is who and to know People is even more helpful than having Money not try to get organised to make their Stay and life a little more secure and a little better ....

Since moving to the DR full-time last October, I have tried, and succeeded, to be more social. I believe it was having to deal with people all day, by the time I got home I just wanted some peace and quiet, and time with my family.  I'm not working here, yet, so my need for socializing is greater.  I do live in a gated community, but the bulk of the staff are Dominican, and I have to say, they are fantastic.  They know more English than I do Spanish, but I am learning and they are teaching.  I have made several very good friends from other countries, also Expats. I think that is much easier, as we seem to share a common adventurous spirit and desire to broaden our horizons.  Given time, I could see making close friends of a few locals, but that's not as easy as our backgrounds, morals and values are all different.  Not a criticism, just a fact.  Most male socializing seems to be done around alcohol, and I'm not a big drinker, so that makes things more difficult.  But being in a gated community, with Expats from around the world, makes it easier to make friends without alcohol or other vices.  Wealth hasn't entered any friendships, but maybe we naturally seek our own selves in others, so we find similar backgrounds and personalities.  I'm not only learning Spanish, but some English (UK slang and terms), and American (Southern US slang and terms).  It's great, and I'm having the best time.  This site is a fantastic source of information, laughs, and comraderie.  I like the way it is moderated, it keeps things polite, yet informative.  You can ask the "stupid question" and you might get some snide comments, but you will also get the answer most times.  I try to be as helpful as I can, answering with my own personal experiences.  Others have much more time in the DR, so have much more information, but I'm still a newbie and try to slant things from that perspective.  If we all focus on the positive, but work to fix the negatives, I think we can make a positive impact in our new home.  And I always keep in mind that while this is Home for me now, I am still a guest in another country, and need to adjust myself to my new reality, not try to change things to what I am used to.
